CROSS-STITCH CIRCLE

LITTLE NEW-YORKERS

DiMenna Children’s History Museum

Free with Museum Admission, for ages 3 – 5

Each class will include story readings, time with historic toys, free exploration, a special Little New-Yorkers hello song, and time in DCHM OR a craft project. The time in DCHM/craft project will alternate each week.

Reading Into History Book Club

Ages 9 - 12

River and Meena seem like they would have nothing in common; River is the son of a Kentucky coal miner, and Meena is an Indian-American girl living in New York City's Chinatown. They begin a friendship as pen pals and, even though their cultures and hometowns are worlds apart, realize they have much to learn from each other. Despite their differences, they live under the same sun.

About Reading into History Book Club:

Each month families read a historical fiction book and participate in on-line discussions with authors, educators, and other families. Get ideas for discussion, ask authors questions, and respond to other book club members’ posts! At the end of each month families can attend a Book Wrap event, where they will share reactions to the book, see cool museum objects and documents related to the story, and meet other historical fiction fans!

Based in northern New Jersey, its members participate in air shows, historical retrospects, educational programs, and seminars to provide a living voice and context to the harrowing experiences of World War II veterans.

Victory Belles

Location: Robert H. and Clarice Smith New York Gallery of American History at the New-York Historical Society, 170 Central Park West
Founded in 1941, the USO has played a vital role in boosting morale and patriotism by presenting live entertainment to U.S. armed forces and their families. In the spirit of the meaningful performances that touched countless lives during World War II, the National WWII Museum’s Victory Belles will present two exciting sets of song and dance (one at 12 pm and another at 3 pm) in the New-York Historical Society’s Robert H. and Clarice Smith New York Gallery of American History. Join us in saluting the heroes of World War II with an afternoon of music and fun! The National WWII Museum’s Victory Belles are a vocal trio who travel the globe delighting audiences with their spirited performances, which feature dazzling costumes, audience interaction, and musical hits, all sung in rich, three-part harmony. Created in 2009, today there are sixteen Victory Belles keeping America’s magical musical history alive with regular performances every Wednesday at the National WWII Museum’s Stage Door Canteen, as well as across the country and overseas. Recent notable performances include the USO Gala in Japan, The National Anthem at the Saints NFL football game, the USO Guam Six Star Salute, and on board the USS WASP during Navy Week in New Orleans.
