Will a musical version of the classic film comedy My Man Godfrey soon be serving Broadway?
The New York Post's Michael Riedel writes that Kelly and Lou Gonda, the billionaire airline industry moguls and Grey Gardens producers, have acquired the rights to the 1936 Universal Pictures film and "are going ahead with a musical adaptation."
Starring William Powell and Carole Lombard, My Man Godfrey is often cited as a quintessential screwball comedy. The film concerns a hobo whom a quirky socialite enlists to become her family's butler - and with whom she is soon falling in love. Directed by Gregory LaCava and written by LaCava, Eric Hatch and Morrie Ryskind, My Man Godrey also starred Alice Brady, Eugene Pallette and Mischa Auer, among others. The film was remade in 1957 with June Allyson and David Niven.
