MUSIQA Houston opens its 2012-13 season on September 22, 2012, with the world premiere of Deep Sky Objects by the internationally acclaimed American composer Sebastian Currier. Set to poetry by Sarah Manguso, whose libretto imagines an intergalactic romance, Deep Sky Objects is scored for soprano, piano quintet and electronics; the performance will feature soprano Karol Bennett. The program includes Divided and Scatter-brained from Currier's QuartetSet with the world premiere of choreography by Tina Bohnstedt, danced by Houston Ballet II; and Secret Alchemy for piano quartet by Pierre Jalbert , as well as a set of violin-piano preludes by Lera Auerbach.

The performance takes place at Zilkha Hall, Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, at 7:30 p.m. Performers include soprano Karol Bennett, violinists Lisa Burrell and Maureen Nelson, violist James Dunham, cellist Lachezar Kostov, pianist Tali Morgulis, and the dancers of Houston Ballet II -Tina Bohnstedt, choreographer.

Now in its 11th season, Musiqa was awarded a 2010 Chamber Music America commissioning grant for the creation of Deep Sky Objects, with generous funding provided by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the Chamber Music America Endowment Fund.

Directed by five composers from the Shephed School of Music at Rice University and the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music, Musiqa is a contemporary music group that takes a fresh look at the concert experience by blending dance, poetry, theatre, film and the visual arts with the finest modern repertoire. Musiqa's programs have been recognized by awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Aaron Copland Fund and the Argosy Foundation and been featured on National Public Radio's "All Things Considered." The founding composers of Musiqa are Karim Al-Zand, Anthony Brandt, Pierre Jalbert, Marcus karl Maroney, and Rob Smith.

In addition to its performance series, Musiqa now has one of the largest educational programs of any contemporary music ensemble in the United States: we've performed for over 30,000 public elementary school students since 2004, and 6,000 students were served in 2011-12 alone--all at no cost to schools.
