I Heard You Stopped Writing...
Heigh Ho, dear lovely rainbow tribe, welcome back to Bobby's CD sandbox where we offer our broken-down breakdowns of new music releases. So, strap in and get ready, as Bobby goes on the record ABOUT the record.
This new music entry in the BobbyFiles comes from that ADORBS singer/songwriter & LGBTQ+ advocate, Billy Recce, who, with his new single, begs us all to COME OUT (see, cuz that's the title y'all) but, to quote Inigo Montoya, "I do not think it means what you think it means." This novelty number by a clever young man is a hilarious paean to all the things we became during our 2020 PANdamnit - all the pursuits, hobbies, life choices, changes, revelations about what needed to change, and the people we changed into in the course of that PANdicament. Everything that went from a passing pastime to a passionate part-time (or full-time) pursuit, job, belief system, "program," or profession is on Billy's dart board, and he hurls barbs at each of them with the admonishment of his chorus, "Whoever you are, come out of whoever you are." The song puts a spotlight on a reality in which some of us may have found ourselves, once we "came out" of our homes and worked our way back into the working world, only to find the people around us had course-corrected their lives so much that we hardly recognized them.
He opens the song with a chorus of vocals singing... what else, "COME OUT" in a very 70s funk kind of sound. The poem of his lyrics is terribly witty and, as he sings about weight gain, and moving away, and the "real people" we've become, he weaves in and out of all the tropes of bad TV power watching, bread making, in-home workouts, outdoor workouts, YOGA, etc. The song is hip in a retro way, fun, funny, and surprisingly danceable. Billy pokes fun at all the things we took up during our break that, now, makes the friends that got left behind think - give me a break! Leave behind the yoga and Jesus and stop being the real person you've become and be the person I knew! "I miss the coked-out dreamer I used to know," his lyrics say but his friends have all married "Prius driving, NFT buying" spouses, and all our crazy fun is done. You see, the people he is singing to have all stopped writing, stopped singing, stopped smoking, sold their guitars, and, basically, stopped being all of the things they thought they were, and given up their dreams of being a star. Dark, yes, but in Billy's words and music, Funny too. Have a Listen.
And so, my children, Billy Recce's hilarious new single is not a gay battle cry admonishing denizens of the closet to come into the light, but is a satirical and slightly cynical reproachment that ultimately says, "COME OUT OF WHOEVER YOU ARE!" and be who I know you to be. With its funky rock and roll vibe, this is one to ask Alexa to play while you're cleaning house and you need to dance a bit while you work. It's a reminder that, though your sourdough business might be taking up all your time, there are still dreams of creativity to be had and friends waiting to party, and you should not miss any of it. This one made Little Bobby chair dance and giggle, so it gets a nice
