Music Of Joel Feigin And Camden Boyle In Concert Comes to National Opera Center's Scorca Hall, 4/6

The music of composers Joel Feigin and Camden Boyle will be performed by singers and instrumentalists on Friday, April 6 @ 7:30 PM at Marc A. Scorca Hall of The National Opera Center, 330 Seventh Ave., 7th floor in Manhattan.

Concert repertoire will be Feigin's Tapestry for horn, violin, and piano, Two Songs from Twelfth Night for baritone and piano, and the world premiere of two piano-vocal excerpts from Feigin's latest opera, Oedipus at Colonus: Antigone's Plea for Refuge for soprano and Oedipus's Prayer to the Furies for bass. Mr. Boyle will present his String Quartet, Mid-Month, and Three Piano Preludes.

Performers for the Feigin selections will be soprano Alexandra Batsios, baritone Alexander Charles Boyd, bass Zachary Elmassian, collaborative pianist Brent Funderburk, violinist Maya Bennardo, hornist Cameron West and pianist Markus Kaitila. Performers for Boyle's compositions will be violinists Brenden Zak and Jieming Tang, violist Joseph Peterson, cellist Issei Herr and pianist Jaeyong Kim.

Joel Feigin's works have been widely praised for their "very strong impact, as logical in musical design as they are charged with emotion and drama." (Opera Magazine). His most recent opera, Twelfth Night, based on the play by William Shakespeare, was produced twice in the 2014/2015 season, by the Opera Theater of DePaul University, and the Opera Theater of the University of California, Santa Barbara, where it was praised as "a magical score...sophisticated and playful...fresh and artistically satisfying". Feigin's first opera, Mysteries of Eleusis, was performed at the Moscow Conservatory and the Russian-American Operatic Festival. Commissions include a Fromm Commission for Aviv: Concerto for Piano and Chamber Orchestra, written for Yael Weiss, as well as other commissions for pianists Margaret Mills and Leonard Stein, two orchestral works for the Santa Barbara Youth Symphony, and many chamber works. His CDs include the North/South Recordings 2-CD set, Transience, as well as two major piano works performed by Margaret Mills in Meditations and Overtones on Cambria Master Recordings. Feigin's latest CD, Lament Amid Silence, on the MSR label (MS1413), features violist Helen Callus. Professor Emeritus of Composition at the University of California Santa Barbara, Dr. Feigin studied with Nadia Boulanger at Fontainebleau and with Roger Sessions at The Juilliard School; he also a student of Zen Buddhism. Originally from California, Camden Boyle is now a graduate composition student at the Juilliard School in New York. He has composed music for the Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra, the Young Artist String Quartet at UC Santa Barbara, and several short films. Boyle won the 2013 National Young Composers Challenge Chamber Division, the 2014 Youth for Youth Commission for the Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra, and Best Film Score in the 2014 Reel Loud Film Festival, where he conducted a live performance of his score to A Man, A Mustache. Camden is also a violinist with an extensive background in chamber music, who has played in master-classes with Yo Yo Ma and Gil Shaham.
