The Museum of Arts and Design offers unique arts workshops for teenagers during the summer months in July and August. The new series engages teens and tweens to learn about art and craft, offering week-long afternoon workshops on sculpture and design, jewelry making, paper art, basket weaving, and a clay workshop. Special highlights include a workshop on portfolio development and a studio demonstration on how to make your own bicycle with Bamboo Bike Studio in MAD's Open Studios.
The MAD summer series opens with a 3-day portfolio development workshop from July 12-14, conducted by artist Sonya Blesofsky, who will teach students how to develop an art portfolio. The workshop is designed for college bound students who are looking for additional guidance developing their portfolio.
Hands-on art workshops include a papermaking workshop, July 19-20, teaching how to work with different types of paper; a 3D design workshop, July 26-29, where participants will create projects using traditional materials and found objects; a basket weaving workshop, August 2-5, instructing how to weave baskets; a jewelry workshop August 9-17, teaching the basics of jewelry design from designing an idea to turning it into wearable art; and a clay workshop, August 17-25, where young people will make their own dish and learn how to wedge coil, score, slab and glaze clay.
All workshops are Monday through Wednesday afternoons from 3:00 to 5:00pm. Costs are $250 for non-members, $200 for members, per workshop. All materials are provided. For more information, click here.
