Movin' Out Tour to Play Final Performance in Jan. '07

The national tour of Movin' Out, the Tony Award-winning new musical conceived, choreographed and directed by Twyla Tharp and based on 24 classic songs by Billy Joel, will play its final performance on Sunday, January 21, 2007 in Birmingham, Alabama, after 1,111 performances and three years of touring North America and Japan.

"Launched in Detroit, MI, on January 27, 2004, with the presenting title sponsorship of Visa, the first national tour of Movin' Out set new box office records in eleven of the cities on its national tour route and garnered rave reviews everywhere it moved," according to press notes.

The first national tour of Movin' Out received the 2005 "Best New Musical" and "Best Choreography" Awards from The League of American Theatres and Producers Touring Broadway Awards.

The Broadway production of  played for over three years, closing on December 11, 2005, after 28 previews and 1,303 regular performances.  "It joined the pantheon of great Broadway dance musicals when it surpassed the runs of Contact, Fosse and Bring in 'Da Noise/Bring in 'Da Funk."  Movin' Out received two 2003 Tony Awards – one for Tharp (Best Choreography) and one for Joel (Best Orchestrations – with Musical Supervisor Stuart Malina).

The first national tour stars Broadway's original Tony Award-nominee Keith Roberts and original touring stars and Broadway cast members Holly Cruikshank, David Gomez, Laurie Kanyok, Brendan King and Darren Holden.

Movin' Out is produced by James L. Nederlander, Hal Luftig, Scott E. Nederlander, Terry Allen Kramer, Live Nation and Emanuel Azenberg.  Musical supervision is by Stuart Malina. The show features a scenic design by Santo Loquasto, costume design by Suzy Benzinger, lighting design by Donald Holder and sound design by Brian Ruggles and Peter Fitzgerald.
