CAKE is produced by Progressive Theatre Workshop, a theatre company that makes plays about queer things, and comes on the heels of their highly lauded musical fantasia God Hates This Show which starred Erin Markey and was presented in 2013 and 2014 at HERE and Joe's Pub at The Public Theater, respectively.
In CAKE, a reality show has descended upon a small Denver-based bakery. Negatively covered in the press for its refusal to sell wedding cakes to same-sex couples, business has plummeted and Lotta and Laszlo Daniels are at risk of losing their livelihood. A gender-fluid femme queer with lots of hair in many places aims to bring the bigoted and lovable owners into the 21st century through complete transformation and assimilation aired on national television. A talking wedding cake presides as chaperone, ringmaster, and all-seeing eye.
CAKE will be presented on Sept 2nd, 2016 at 7:30PM at Dixon Place (161 Chrystie Street). Tickets available here: dixonplace.org/performances/cake. For more information and industry ticketing, contact Progressive Theatre Workshop Artistic Director at john@progressivetheatreworkshop.org.
