There are many misconceptions, myths, and madness clouding up the what it really takes to develop, pitch, and sell an animated project. Utilizing his own ten year experience in the pitching world, along with candid advice from successful creators and leading development executives alike, author and animation director David B. Levy has put together a useful book on the subject: Animation Development: From Pitch to Production (Allworth Press). Join us for an intimate industry panel on the ins-and-outs of pitching today and be sure to bring your questions too. Followed immediately by a book signing event.
David B. Levy is the creator of Fiona Finds Out, a preschool series optioned for development by the Disney Channel. He is currently under contract with Classic Media and Garan, Inc. to write and develop animated properties. Levy is the author of Your Career in Animation: How To Survive and Thrive (Allworth Press, 2006). Levy's second book Animation Development: From Pitch to Production, was published in September 2009. Levy has directed Nickelodeon's Blue's Clues, the
Noggin Channel's PIinky Dinky Doo, and Cartoon Network's Adult Swim series, Assy McGee. Levy has lectured and taught at Parsons School of Design, School of Visual Arts, NYU and Pratt, and is president of the New York chapter of Association International du Film d'Animation (ASIFA.)
Brown Johnson is President of Animation at Nickelodeon and MTVN Kids and Family Group. Ms. Johnson spearheads development and production for all animated programming across Nickelodeon, the largest provider of television animation in the US, while continuing to oversee development and production for all preschool programming. In addition to supervising the creative direction of contemporary classics such as SpongeBob SquarePants, The Fairly Odd Parents and Nick's latest hits The Penguins of Madagascar in partnership with Dreamworks Animation SKG, Fanboy and Chum Chum, Back At The Barnyard and The Mighty B! starring Amy Poehler, Ms. Johnson is also the driving force in shepherding upcoming Nickelodeon series including Kung Fu Panda. She supervises creative executive teams on both the East and West Coasts, managing the creative direction and coordination efforts between series production, on-air promotions, marketing and consumer products. Additionally, Johnson oversees global animation development for Nickelodeon Networks.
Fran Krause is the co-creator and co-director of two original pilots for Cartoon Network, Utica Cartoon, and Upstate Four. He was born in Utica, New York. At fifteen he enrolled in night classes at the Munson Williams-Proctor Institute, where he was allowed to hang out with college kids and draw naked ladies. At eighteen he shipped off to Providence, Rhode Island, to attend the Rhode Island School of Design. After graduation he moved to New York City. Then he moved back to
Providence. Then he moved back to New York. He currently teaches animation at Mercy College and works as a commercial and freelance animator.
