On Tuesday, January 27 and Wednesday, January 28, Mike Doughty, singer/songwriter and former frontman for 90's band Soul Coughing unveils the world premiere of his rock opera REVELATION to The Jerome L. Greene Performance Space at WNYC.
Inspired by the vivid imagery of angels and beasts in the Book of Revelation, Doughty brings to life the final chapter of the Bible with driving, funky music. Doughty himself stars as John the Revelator in a production that includes 20 songs, live music, and stunning hand-drawn images projected onto the stage.
"The Book of Revelation always struck me as a kind of a psychedelic monster movie, with this incredibly bizarre and ornate language describing really weird, jarring images," said Doughty. "It's fascinated me throughout my life, from my teenage years as a fan of Iron Maiden's "Number of the Beast" to my adulthood as a reader of poetry and a songwriter. This haunting and mysterious book always seemed like it would make a great show and combining it with my love of rock and roll seemed like a fantastic fit."
Doughty had long considered creating a rock opera, and was motivated to finally do it in January 2013 when Kurt Andersen, host of public radio's Studio 360, invited listeners to set creative New Year's resolutions. Since accepting the challenge and committing to the project, Doughty has been checking in with Studio 360 regularly; the interviews are available here and here.
REVELATION is written, composed, directed and performed by Doughty. The show also stars actress Amber Gray, singers Xenia Rubinos and Melissa McMillan, and musicians Andrew Livingston, John Guari and Pete Wilhoit. Visual art and costumes created by Zebadiah Keneally.
Andersen will host a post-show Q & A with Doughty on opening night.
Tickets are $40 and available at www.thegreenespace.org
