Bette Midler has joined the cast of the untitled film centered around Phil Spector. Variety reports that Midler joins stage and screen veterans Jeffrey Tambor and Al Pacino. The film is written and directed by David Mamet, who counts among his many writing credits the Tony nominated and Pulitzer Award-winning Glengarry Glen Ross, and the Oscar winner The Verdict.
The 2003 shooting death of actress Lana Clarkson in his Alhambra, California home led to record producer Phil Spector being charged with murder in the second degree. After a 2007 mistrial, he was convicted in 2009 and given a prison sentence of 19 years to life.
Although the film hasn't yet been approved by the network, if the project gets the green light it would feature Midler as defense attorney Linda Kenney Baden, Tambor as Bruce Cutler, and Pacino as Phil Spector.
Bette Midler's first starring role in the feature film, The Rose, garnered two Golden Globe Awards, a Grammy for the film's title song and a best actress Oscar nomination. Additional films include Down and Out in Beverly Hills, Ruthless People, Outrageous Fortune, Big Business and her most popular movie, Beaches. Forty years, four Grammys, four Golden Globes, three Emmys, a Tony Award and tons of record-breaking performances since she hit the scene, the "Divine Miss M" is still going strong.
