Metropolitan Playhouse is pleased to announce the appointment of James Haugland as the first Managing Director in its history. The creation of the Managing Director position comes in response to a continuing trend of growth and audience support.

Mr. Haugland has worked as a Program Manager with the Baltimore Shakespeare Partnership and Canvas Director with Citizen's Campaign Network, a national not-for-profit advocacy group, and is a graduate of Goucher College and Circle in the Square Theater School. His background in community building will serve to extend the Theater's influence as an institution of cultural relevance and immediacy.

Since its 1992 inception as a small membership company housed in a high school auditorium, Metropolitan Playhouse has grown into a professional theater of national renown, at home in a unique East Village theater, and producing over ten separate productions and festivals each season. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Alex Roe since 2001, Metropolitan is devoted to works that examine American identity in the context of our history and theatrical tradition, producing a range of established and new plays that provide context for and insight into contemporary American experience.
