Mzia Nioradze will sing Azucena in Verdi's Il Trovatore this evening, October 8, replacing Dolora Zajick, who is ill.
Nioradze sang her first Met Azucena in the 2008-09 season. The Georgian mezzo-soprano made her Met debut in 2002 as Matriosha and Mavra in Prokofiev's War and Peace. Her Met repertory also includes Hélène Bezukhova in War and Peace, Maddalena in Verdi's Rigoletto, Princess Marina in Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov, and Amneris in Verdi's Aida.
Il Trovatore, conducted by Daniele Callegari, runs through October 25, then returns to the repertory from January 9 to 24, 2013. This evening's performance will also star Carmen Giannattasio as Leonora; Gwyn Hughes-Jones as Manrico; Franco Vassallo as di Luna; and Morris Robinson as Ferrando.
