30 elementary school students from New York City public schools will compete in an all-day chess tournament at The Cloisters Museum and Gardens, the branch of The Metropolitan Museum of Art for medieval art and architecture located in Fort Tryon Park in northern Manhattan. The top 10 students will play using replicas of the world-famous Lewis Chessmen, ivory chessmen from the Middle Ages. A group of 34 of these famed chess pieces is on loan to The Cloisters from the British Museum for the exhibition The Game of Kings: Medieval Ivory Chessmen from the Isle of Lewis (on view through April 22, 2012).
The tournament is organized by Chess-in-the-Schools, a nonprofit education organization dedicated to improving academic performance and building self-esteem among inner-city public school children.
Chess-in-the-Schools instructors will be available to provide chess lessons to Museum visitors.
