Music From and Inspired By "Desperate Housewives," a new CD featuring tunes related to the steamy primetime hit, will boast a track by Tony Award-winner Idina Menzel.
Menzel's contribution to the album, which will be released on September 20th on Hollywood Records, will be "Damsel in Distress." The star, who has also had a rock career in addition to her thriving musical theatre one, will be joined by Shania Twain ("Shoes"), SheDaisy ("God Bless the American Housewife"), Anna Nalick ("Band of Gold"), Liz Phair ("Mother's Little Helper"), Indigo Girls ("Mrs. Robinson"), Martina McBride ("Harper Valley P.T.A."), Leann Rimes ("Running Out of Time"), Joss Stone ("Treat Me Right [I'm Yours for Life]"), Sara Evans ("One's on the Way"), Macy Gray ("Boom Boom"), Gloria Estefan ("Young Hearts Run Free") and k.d. lang ("Dreams of the Everyday Housewife"), as well as by Danny Elfman (the "Desperate Housewives" theme). In addition to the songs, dialogue from the show will be featured on the CD.
ABC's "Desperate Housewives," which became one of last season's biggest (and most-discussed) smashes, is about sex in suburbia and features Teri Hatcher, Marcia Cross, Eva Longoria, Felicity Huffman and Nicollette Sheridan in the title roles. The show kicks off its second season on September 25th.
Menzel, who will next appear in Michael John LaChiusa's See What I Wanna See at the Public Theatre, received the 2004 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her turn as Elphaba in Wicked. She played Amneris in Broadway's Aida, portrayed Kate in Andrew Lippa's off-Broadway musical The Wild Party and appeared in the City Center Encores! production of Hair, as well as in the Actors' Fund Benefit Concert of Funny Girl. The burgeoning film actress will also be seen in Ask the Dust, starring Colin Farrell and Salma Hayek.
