Megan Smith and Alphonso Walker Jr. Present a Fresh Revival of DUTCHMAN Image

In celebration of Black History Month, co-producers Megan Smith and Alphonso Walker Jr. present a fresh revival of Dutchman by Amiri Baraka, an emotionally charged and highly symbolic version of the Adam and Eve story. Directed by Broadway performer and director, DeMone, this production has an immersive concept, leading the audience into a recreation of the subway atmosphere and seating audience directly in the train car. The play runs February 8-11, 2018 at The Secret Theatre; tickets on sale now.

About Dutchman from SamuelFrench.com: A lascivious blonde tries every vulgar way she knows to pick up and seduce a decent black youth in a subway car. Failing, she resorts to humiliating him. This breaks the facade of his decency, as he descends to her level for a spitfire fight and decrees that murder "would make us all sane." No one is prepared for what happens next.

"I am so very excited about directing this work, but I'm also very saddened by the fact that this play is STILL timely and makes us feel as if we have made very little progress as it relates to race and gender relations," says Director DeMone.

DeMone is an award winning actor/singer and the founding artistic director of The New American Theatre Co. NY. Broadway, national, and international credits include: RAGTIME, MISS SAIGON, RENT, J.C. SUPERSTAR, FAIRYTALE CHRISTMAS, THE GOSPEL AT COLONUS, UNCLE VANYA, CROWNS, THE FULL MONTY, BIG RIVER, SWEET CHARITY, ONCE ON THIS ISLAND, BLACK NATIVITY, THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS, ABOUT CLARENCE AND ME, SIDESHOW, OTHELLO, and GRAND HOTEL.

Directing credits include: BACK O TOWN (World Premiere), JOE TURNERS COME AND GONE, JITNEY, CROWNS, PATIENT ZERO (Lab), ENDANGERED SPECIES (Workshop), TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA, THE MOUNTAINTOP, I NEVER SAW ANOTHER BUTTERFLY, and SPLIT SECOND. DeMone is the recipient of one regional Emmy Award, one Joseph Jefferson Award (Jeff Award), and an Audelco Award nomination.

"Art is a weapon in the struggle of ideas, the class struggle." Playwright Amiri Baraka (born Everett LeRoi Jones; October 7, 1934 - January 9, 2014), previously known as LeRoi Jones and Imamu Amear Baraka, was an African-American writer of poetry, drama, fiction, essays and music criticism. He was the author of numerous books of poetry and taught at several universities, including the State University of New York at Buffalo and the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He received the PEN Open Book Award, previously known as the Beyond Margins Award, in 2008 for Tales of the Out and the Gone. Baraka's career spanned nearly 50 years, and his themes range from black liberation to white racism. (Wikipedia).

The cast of Dutchman includes Alphonso Walker, Jr. as Clay, Megan Smith as Lula, and Lenny Thomas as Young Negro. Brian Pacelli is scenic designer, Melinda Hare is costume designer and Ran Xia is sound and graphic designer. Fight direction and dramaturgy by Meron Langsner, PhD.
