The Broadway premiere of The Outsiders, the new musical based on the novel by S.E. Hinton & Francis Ford Coppola’s film, begins previews tonight, Saturday, March 16, 2024, ahead of a Thursday, April 11, 2024 opening night at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre.
The cast features Brody Grant as Ponyboy Curtis, Sky Lakota-Lynch as Johnny Cade, Joshua Boone as Dallas Winston, Brent Comer as Darrel Curtis, Jason Schmidt as Sodapop Curtis, Emma Pittman as Cherry Valance, Daryl Tofa as Two-Bit Mathews, Kevin William Paul as Bob Sheldon, and Dan Berry as Paul Holden.
The company also includes Jordan Chin, Milena J. Comeau, Barton Cowperthwaite, Tilly Evans-Krueger, Henry Gendron, RJ Higton, Wonza Johnson, Sean Harrison Jones, Maggie Kuntz, Renni Anthony Magee, SarahGrace Mariani, Melody Rose, Josh Strobl, Victor Carrillo Tracey, Trevor Wayne.
The Outsiders features a book by Adam Rapp with Justin Levine, music and lyrics by Jamestown Revival (Jonathan Clay & Zach Chance) and Justin Levine, music supervision, arrangements & orchestrations by Justin Levine, choreography by Rick Kuperman & Jeff Kuperman and directed by Danya Taymor.
In Tulsa, Oklahoma, 1967, the hardened hearts and aching souls of Ponyboy Curtis, Johnny Cade and their chosen family of ‘outsiders’ are in a fight for survival and a quest for purpose in a world that may never accept them. A story of the bonds that brothers share and the hopes we all hold on to, this gripping new musical reinvigorates the timeless tale of ‘haves and have nots’, of protecting what’s yours and fighting for what could be.

Brody Grant is a New York based multi-hyphenate artist making his Broadway debut in The Outsiders. Selected work includes Parade (New York City Center) and The Outsiders (La Jolla). Brody is also an independent recording artist, and his music can be found on his IG handle @brody_grant.

Joshua Boone can currently be seen starring as the lead of Netflix’s A Jazzman’s Blues, written, directed, and produced by Tyler Perry, which premiered worldwide at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film garnered Boone two 2023 NAACP Image Award nominations for Outstanding Actor in A Motion Picture and Outstanding Breakthrough Performance in a Motion Picture.
Boone recently wrapped filming on Fleeing, starring opposite André Holland, Nicole Beharie, and DeWanda Wise, and it was recently announced that he will soon begin production on the Morgan Freeman-produced feature film, Last Meals, starring opposite Samuel L. Jackson, Boyd Holdbrook, and David Strathairn. He previously starred in Premature for director Rashaad Ernesto Green opposite Zora Howard and can also be seen in indie release Wheels for writer/director Paul Starkman. In 2018, he completed a guest star role on Seven Seconds for Netflix.
Boone was recently seen on stage at MTC in Dominique Morisseau’s Tony-nominated Broadway production of Skeleton Crew, for which he was nominated for a Drama Desk Award, starring opposite Phylicia Rashad and Chanté Adams for Tony-winning actor/director Ruben Santiago-Hudson. Boone starred on stage at MCC in All The Natalie Portmans after previously starring in Ivo van Hove’s highly acclaimed Broadway production of Network opposite Bryan Cranston. Additional stage credits include Artney Jackson (Williamstown), Actually (MTC, Williamstown), Mother Courage and Her Children(Classic Stage Company), and Holler If Ya Hear Me (Broadway).

Jason Schmidt is making his Broadway debut with The Outsiders. TV: “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies”, “FBI: Most Wanted”, “The Chair”. Regional Theater: Cinderella (Theater Under the Stars), The Outsiders(La Jolla Playhouse). Jason is a singer/songwriter who releases music on all platforms. He studied at Carnegie Mellon.
