Medicine Show Theatre presents Caligula, Albert Camus's gorgeous, provocative classic in the first production in New York City in a decade. It is a tour de force of perverse humor with splashes of vulgarity, vaudevillian tendencies and, the central figure himself: Caligula; a wild, unfettered leader of Shakespearean dimension. Sound like someone we know? Mark J. Dempsey, directs.
Medicine Show THEATRE presents SEPT. 13 - OCT. 14
PREVIEWS BEGIN SEPT. 6; OPENING NIGHT IS SEPT. 13. BOTH PREVIEWS AND PERFORMANCES ARE THURSDAY THROUGH SATURDAY AT 8PM, AND SUNDAY AT 4PM THROUGH OCT. 14 AT THE Medicine Show THEATRE AT 545 WEST 52ND ST., 3RD FLOOR, NYC, NY 10019.
Every now and then society finds itself in an historical moment that is so bizarre, or extreme, that it can only be held up and examined within the context of art. Camus' Caligula was conceived and written in response to the rise of The Third Reich and the subsequent war. "We all know how that went," observed company board chairwoman Regan Vann Batuello. "We do not, however, know how our future will go, but we see it as the role of the artist to highlight our own society with all its warts and blemishes. As such, Caligula is once again a leader for our times," she said.
"We see it as our duty as artists to comment on the proudly ignorant and cruel policies of the Trump administration by highlighting their similarities to another capricious tyrant more interested in the cult of personality than good government."
Caligula stars Richard Keyser, with Demetrius Blocker, Chris Cunningham, David Elyha, Janine Georgette, Alex Miskin, Samuel Muniz, Mario Peguero, Diana Westphal and Perri Yaniv.
