McKay, Samonsky, Reinders, and More Sing Out SONGS OF PROTEST at 54 Below

 

Broadway and popular music stars come together for a special performance of protest songs and political satire, Songs of Protest, on Wednesday, March 29th at 9:30 PM at Feinstein's/54 Below, Broadway's Supper Club, with a portion of the proceeds going to benefit the National Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union.

The show features Singer-Songwriter Nellie McKay (Threepenny Opera, Old Hats, Get Away From Me), Eurovision star Tamar Kaprelian, Andrew Samonsky (South Pacific, The Bridges of Madison County), Larry Owens (Spamilton), Kate Reinders' (Something Rotten, Wicked) and Sarah Litzsinger's (Beauty and the Beast) award-winning band TASTiSKANK; hip-hop artist Nova (Lifetime's The Rap Game), Amy Jo Jackson (Hostess - 54 Below Concert Lab Series), Joan Barber (Follies, Man of La Mancha), Noel Carey (Murder for Two and the award-winning webseries Brooklyn Sound), Em Grosland (The Erklings), Babs Winn and Jack Grace of The Onion News Network, plus many more!

The set encompasses nearly a century's worth of protest songs in all styles - Motown, folk, showtunes, hip-hop, Berlin cabaret, country, disco, and beyond.

The show's conceiver and music director, Andrew Fox, says, "Protest songs are about a lot of things - rallying people behind a cause, speaking truth to power, and spreading a message. But I think at their core, they send a message to other people that you are not crazy for feeling the way you feel about this problem. Whether it's 1920s Germany, 1960s San Francisco, or NYC today, these songs are funny, moving, fun, and relevant."

Andrew Fox has been music directing, orchestrating, producing, and teaching for nearly a decade. In 2012, the New York Musical Theatre Festival presented him with the Outstanding Musical Direction and Outstanding Arrangements awards for Foreverman: The Musical. He has also produced the cast albums for Starkid's Twisted and Justin Roberts' Hansel and Gretel (which he also orchestrated), and was recently the subject of an Al Jazeera English documentary Rebel Education for his innovative work teaching pop songwriting, vocal performance, and audio production in Armenia.

Director Pat Cerasaro's credits include collaborating with Andrew Lloyd Webber and Jim Steinman on the New York City premiere of their musical Whistle Down The Wind as well as a series of unprecedented special concert events created with Steinman at Feinstein's/54 Below including Total Eclipse, Paradise Found and Steinman Stripped.

Also featured in the cast is Logan Hart (Book of Mormon), Abigail Shapiro, Samantha Joy Pearlman, Onyie Nwachukwu, and vocal trio America's Sweethearts.

Samantha Joy Pearlman (Performer/Assistant Director) is thrilled to be back performing and making her directorial debut at Feinstein’s/54 Below! Up next is her brand new concert Summer in The City: The Music of Regina Spektor on May 5th at 11:30pm at Feinstein’s/54 Below, also music directed by Andrew Fox. Evan Feist (Producer) is so excited to be back at Feinstein’s/54 Below after his sold-out debut arranging and performing in Broadway Goes A Cappella. Feisthas vocal coached for NBC's The Voice, worked for America's Got Talent, and teaches a cappella workshops all over the country with his company, Creative Vocal Lab. In 2014, the New York Musical Theatre Festival presented him with the Outstanding Musical Direction and Outstanding Arrangements awards for A Cappella: the musical.
