Maureen McGovern will reprise her role as Marmee in the national tour of Little Women. The tour kicks off at San Diego's Civic Theater on August 30th, and will play 30 cities. So far, San Jose, Columbus, Chicago, Atlanta, Birmingham, Ft. Lauderdale and Washington DC have been announced as stops for the musical.

The musical, based upon the cherished Louisa May Alcott classic, tells the story of a resilient and loving family living in Concord, MA during the Civil War. In addition to McGovern, the show currently stars Sutton Foster as headstrong Jo March, Danny Gurwin as her suitor, Laurie, and Megan McGinnis, Jenny Powers and Amy McAlexander as the other sisters.

The show's book is by Alan Knee, with music and lyrics by Jason Howland and Mindi Dickstein, respectively. Little Women is directed by Susan H. Schulman and choreographed by Michael Lichtefeld. Currently playing at the Virginia Theatre, the musical started previews on December 7, 2004 and opened on January 23rd of this year. Little Women is produced by Ken Gentry, Randall Wreghitt and Dani Davis.

Davis speaks highly of the show and of McGovern's stature as a star: "We think the positive audience response the show generates and the well-known and recognizable titles makes this a must see on the road. When Maureen expressed interest in touring and was available for the 2005-2006 season, it sealed the deal!"

McGovern's career encompasses theatre, concerts, cabaret and recordings. She co-starred with Sting as Polly Peachum in the 1989 revival of 3 Penny Opera, was a replacement Luisa in the original cast of Nine, and a replacement Mabel in the 1981 Pirates of Penzance revival. She played Mrs. Anna in the national tour of The King and I, and regional credits include Elegies, Dear World, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and South Pacific. She was Mary Turner in recorded concert versions of the Gershwins' Of Thee I Sing and Let Em Eat Cake. As one of the first ladies of the cabaret world, McGovern has released almost a dozen solo albums including Out of this World: McGovern Sings Arlen and The Music Never Ends: The Lyrics of Alan and Marilyn Bergman.
