The Mayor Who Would Be Sondheim, a new comedy by John Doble, will run at the Mazer Theater (197 East Broadway) from August 13th to August 28th as part of the New York International Fringe Festival.

The show "is based loosely on playwright Doble's earlier life in politics. Doble (Blind Date, Montage, Made in America) worked in city government for a number of years as well as in numerous statewide and national elections - including, most recently, the John Kerry Presidential bid," states a press release. "A play that is both whimsical and hard-boiled, it's set in a small New Jersey city whose mayor is enamored of Broadway showtunes, who never met a civic issue that couldn't be addressed with a few, well-chosen lyrics. His love of music by Stephen Sondheim and other songwriters is put to the test as he attempts to lead the troubled city through bankruptcy, a sanitation strike, racial tension, citizen unrest and accusations of police misconduct -- all while running for re-election!"

Directed by Tom Rowan (Grief, The Honey Makers), The Mayor Who Would Be Sondheim features Stu Richel (as the Mayor), Nina Daniels, Scott Giguere, Craig Anthony Grant, Larry Greenbush, and Mitch Poulos. Janice Haas will serve as the costume designer, with a set and lighting designer to be announced. The show is presented by Dawn Elane, with Carpe Dream Productions.

The Mayor Who Would Be Sondheim will perform on Saturday, August 13 at 6:15 PM, Sunday, August 14 at 3:45 PM, Sunday, August 21 at 2:30 PM, Wednesday, August 24 at 8:00 PM, and Sunday, August 28 at 12 PM. Tickets are $15, and can be reserved by calling 212-279-4488 or by visiting online at www.fringenyc.org.
