Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today issued an official proclamation to Actors' Equity Association ("AEA" or "Equity") declaring Sunday, May 26, 2013 as "Actors' Equity Day" to coincide with the labor union's 100th anniversary.

In his proclamation, Mayor Bloomberg states, "Actors' Equity Association is dedicated to improving the wellbeing of the people who make theater and the performing arts great and we are glad to join the members and leadership of this organization as they celebrate its 100th anniversary."

AEA represents nearly 17,000 professional stage actors and stage managers living and working in the state of New York, with more than 49,000 members nationwide. Equity has made significant cultural and economic contributions to the region, serving as a catalyst for a richly diverse and rewarding theatrical community on Broadway, Off Broadway and across New York State.

AEA has been a leader for social change and was among the first unions to stand up against segregation and denounce blacklisting. For the last century, AEA has stood for excellence and diversity in the American theater, and for fairness, dignity and respect for its members.
