The Only Make Believe program debuted in October 1999 at Rusk Institute's Pediatric Unit, NYU Langone Medical Center. Dena Hammerstein established Only Make believe in memory of her late husband James (son of Oscar Hammerstein), for his dedication to the theater and her own passionate love for children in need.
Since 1999, this organization has brought interactive theater, performed by professional actors, to over 25,000 children and families in more than 50 hospitals free-of-charge in New York City and Washington D.C. With celebrity support from Jude Law, Mike Myers, Sir Ian McKellen, Rachel Weisz, and Alan Cumming Only Make Believe has brought joy and hope to the hearts of families and children facing hard times.
Only Make Believe's interactive live performances allow children to participate and perform alongside actors, transporting them from a hospital to the enchanting world of make believe. This organization strives to bring the healing power of imagination and laughter to its audience. The concept developed out of Dena's desire to introduce children living with chronic illness and disabilities to the magical world of theater.
