Steve Alpert and Ken Greiner in association with Slant Theatre Project present the world-premiere of THE STEADFAST, Mat Smart's gripping new play that looks at eight U.S. soldiers across the sweep of American history – from the Revolutionary War to the War in Afghanistan – and The Common thread that connects them across continents and centuries. THE STEADFAST is inspired by Mr. Alpert's Legacy painting. Preview performances of THE STEADFAST begin January 20 prior to an official press opening of January 23 at TBG Theatre (312 West 36th Street) in Manhattan. Slant Theatre Project's co-founder Wes Grantom will direct.
The mother of a fallen U.S. soldier refuses to leave the red oak tree her son planted. A father forbids his sons from joining the military. A young woman enlists on the afternoon her country is attacked without discussing it with her family. Mat Smart's new play THE STEADFAST is an unflinching look at eight U.S. soldiers throughout American history – and The Common links that connect them.
Directed by Wes Grantom (EAGER TO LOSE at Ars Nova, K2 at Berkshire Theatre Festival), the cast of THE STEADFAST will feature: Matt Dellapina (Vineyard Theatre's OUTSIDE PEOPLE, Roundabout's DREAM OF THE BURNING BOY), John Behlmann (Broadway: JOURNEY'S END; Off-Bway: 39 STEPS), Sean Patrick Reilly (Broadway: SUPERIOR DONUTS; Film: ARGO), David Ryan Smith (Broadway: ONE MAN TWO GUVNORS), Alex Ubokudom (THE BROTHERS SIZE, Magic Theatre), Brendan Titley (AS YOU LIKE IT, NYSF), Ben Kahre (HIGHER, A.C.T.), Susan Greenhill (DEAD ACCOUNTS, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park), and Cloteal Horne (HENRY VI, Shakespeare & Co.).
Mat Smart's plays include THE HOPPER COLLECTION (Huntington Theatre and Magic Theatre), SAMUEL J AND K (Williamstown Theatre Festival and Steppenwolf), and THE 13TH OF PARIS (City Theatre). He is currently a member of the Dorothy Streslin New American Writer's Group at Primary Stages.
The design team behind THE STEADFAST is: Daniel Zimmerman (set design), Tilly Grimes (costume design), Driscoll Otto (lighting design), Daniel Kluger (sound design) and Phil Pickens (original compositions).
