Martha Lorin returns to the Metropolitan Room for a special jazz afternoon, "My Mother's Favorite Songs", featuring Bassist: Harvie S, Alto sax: Ralph Lalama, and Pianist: Richard Siegel. The concert will run for one show only on Sunday, May 12th, 2013 at 2:00 p.m.
My Mother's Favorite Songs" will include love songs from the jazz standards songbook, plus several songs by Martha herself. Martha is constantly exploring the jazz landscape with a spirit of lifting and broadening her musical acumen. Her explorations have presented the opportunity to work with a wide range of world class musicians, including, Paul Smith, Benny Green, Richard Wyands, Harvie S, Eddie Marshall, John Clayton, Leon Joyce, Butch Miles, and Mark Isham, to name only a few.
Widely acclaimed for the timeless quality and wonderful warm contralto, Martha is a singer's singer, a jazz artist's artist, a cabaret performer par excellence. With six recordings to her name, including the critically acclaimed CDS:"Come Walk With Me" which features her deep lyrical reading of the Johnny Frigo standard "Detour Ahead" (which incidentally featured Mr. Frigo on violin); to her lovely reading of Porter's "Every time we say Goodbye"; and "Blues over Broadway" featuring arrangements by Russ Kassoff written specifically for Martha, featuring the radio hit "Alone Together", which reached number one on several national radio stations, to "Get Out of Town", "Send in the Clowns" featuring Larry Gray on flute and bass; and her stunning avant garde version of "What I Did for Love"; Martha continues to grow a an singer and a songwriter, having received several Billboard songwriting awards.
Harvie S is an award winning composer, arranger, bassist, educator and producer is continually challenging himself and his peers, expanding the borders of musical direction. A legendary bassist, he has performed and recorded with Stan Getz, Chet Baker, Dexter Gordon, Tony Bennett, Ray Baretto, Michael Brecker, Jean Pierre Rampal, Paquito D'River, Sheila Jordan and Gil Evan.
Ralph Lalama has reached a dignified status as a widely respected master of the tenor through his achievements in the big bands of Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Carla Bley and the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra - now the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra - with whom he is a featured soloist on Monday nights at New York's Village Vanguard. His experience includes appearances with Barry Harris, James Moody, Harold Danko, Mel Torme, Carmen McRae, Tom Harrell and Joe Morello. He has recorded with Joe Morello, the Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, and the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, under the direction of Jon Faddis - now the John Faddis Jazz Orchestra.
Rich Siegel's credits include showcase performances of "The Sphinx Winx" musical comedy, Paper Bag Players children's theater company and a USO tour of Far East. On-stage singer-pianist roles in Off Broadway Shows "Our Sinatra" and "Jacques Brel Returns". On TV, Rich was featured with Michel LeGrand in national ad for Steinway & Sons Piano Co., keyboard sidekick on "Sunday Brunch with Bobby Rivers" VH-1. As a accompianist, Rich has worked with Laura Branigan, Diahann Carroll, Chinese pop star Karen Tong and Richard Skipper.
