Manfred Honeck To Conduct NY Philharmonic With Frank Peter Zimmermann As Soloist

Manfred Honeck will conduct the New York Philharmonic in Martin?'s Violin Concerto No. 1, with Frank Peter Zimmermann as soloist; waltzes and polkas by J. Strauss II and Jos. Strauss; and Dvo?ák's Carnival Overture. The waltzes and polkas include Jos. Strauss's The Dragonfly and J. Strauss II's The Gypsy Baron Overture, Hail to Hungary!, On the Beautiful Blue Danube, At the Hunt, In Krapfen's Woods; and Thunder and Lightning. The program takes place Thursday, November 15, 2018, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, November 16 at 8:00 p.m.; and Saturday, November 17 at 8:00 p.m.

The program features Central European musicians and dance-inflected music. Austrian conductor Manfred Honeck will conduct two works by Czech composers incorporating Czech dances - Dvo?ák and Martin?, the latter performed by German violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann - as well as waltzes and polkas by Viennese composers J. Strauss II and Jos. Strauss.

Frank Peter Zimmermann and Manfred Honeck, a former violinist, are collaborating in performances of Martin?'s Violin Concerto No. 1 around the world. Mr. Zimmermann said: "This irrepressible, melodiously Bohemian musicality which the piece possesses is simply enchanting. And that's the challenge for us performers. Everyone - whether soloist, conductor, or orchestra musician - has to have internalized the complicated rhythm with its metric shifts inspired by Czech dance music." Manfred Honeck and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra released an acclaimed recording of Viennese waltzes in 2014. Gramophone magazine wrote: "Honeck twirls us through a winning programme with every solo beautifully pointed, every transition perfectly judged."

Manfred Honeck will return in March 2019 to lead an all-Mozart program that includes the Requiem (unfinished).

The New York Philharmonic will offer an allotment of free tickets to young people ages 13-26 for the concert on Friday, November 16 as part of Philharmonic Free Fridays.

Single tickets start at $33. (Ticket prices subject to change.) A limited number of $18 tickets for select concerts may be available for students within 10 days of the performance at nyphil.org/rush, or in person the day of; valid identification is required. Tickets may also be purchased at the David Geffen Hall Box Office. The Box Office opens at 10:00 a.m. Monday through Saturday, and at noon on Sunday. On performance evenings, the Box Office closes one-half hour after performance time; other evenings it closes at 6:00 p.m.
