Make/Shift Presents SHE Creates 2k19 Featuring The New York Premiere Of THE CLARK DOLL

Make/Shift, in association with AKIN, expands upon last year's first-ever, electrifying SHE Creates festival: an annual, all-inclusive celebration of womanhood and gender nonconformity. This year's event, SHE Creates 2k19, will take place at New Ohio Theatre and will feature: the New York Premiere of The Clark Doll, written by Liz Morgan and directed by Tyler Thomas; a variety of Opening Acts by female and genderqueer artists; an Art Gallery featuring dozens of emerging, female and genderqueer visual artists; and a Party, hosted by AKIN.

"We're thrilled to expand on last year's incredible event and to continue our work of offering emerging artists - especially women and queer artists - a space to create," said the Artistic Director of Make/Shift, Irene Lazaridis.

This year's SHE Creates centers around the theme of Reclaiming Identity and features over 20 female or genderqueer artists and their work. These works include writing (film, theatre, narrative, poetry), performance art, visual art, video, movement, music, and comedy. The headlining act, The Clark Doll, is a beautiful, bold full-length play written by one of 2017's Torchbearers for Black Theatre, Liz Morgan, directed by Tyler Thomas (The Public Theater, Soho Rep), designed by Isabel Le, Rashidah Nelson, Christopher Stevenson, and Attilio Rigotti, stage managed by Madison Burnes, and starring Shelley Fort, Marion Grey, and TanyaMaria.

"The experiment of The Clark Doll, to me, is a kind of psychological resistance, a decolonization of the imagination. The play asks how we do war with the marginal, often violent narratives given to us by society as black women, and more largely as communities of color. And how, through such work, we might move towards the (re)building of our own liberated social and spiritual identities," said Tyler Thomas, director of The Clark Doll.

In The Clark Doll, three black women find themselves confined to a space; the kind that doesn't allow visitors. It isn't the first time but hopefully, it will be the last. Natasha wants to escape for good; Judi wants to sleep; and Sophia just doesn't want to end up left alone. Meanwhile, this trio of "sistas" will do what they can to survive their circumstances and each other.
