This was a big week in London for John Galliano as he made is debut as the creative director for Maison Martin Margiela. But that wasn't all that happened. It seems that when no one was looking, the French fashion house quietly changed it's name to Maison Margiela. Just like YSL when to just Saint Laurent when Hedi Slimane took over and now Maison Martin Margiela has dropped the "Martin" now that Galliano is in charge. Could this be a growing trend?
A company spokesman told the NYTimes that the new name "reflects the evolution of the house." Basically, Galliano wanted to make his reign as creative director distinctive. I get it.
What's interesting is that Maison Margiela made the change very quietly unlike Saint Laurent back in 2012, who received a lot of backlash from diehard YSL fans. There was no press release, no formal statement, it just happened. Their website and social media still need to be updated to reflect the change, but I am sure that will happen soon.
