Magloire Brings New Chamber Ballet to Mark Morris Center Next Month

Miro Magloire's New Chamber Ballet returns to the Mark Morris Dance Center with repertory works and the World Premiere of a new work to 22-year old composer Elizabeth Gartman, November 12 & 13, 7:30 PM.

The as yet untitled new work marks the launch of a new collaboration between Magloire and the Manhattan School of Music: a Composition Prize for Dance that will be awarded every year to one of the school's composition students. The prize winner receives a commission to write a work for New Chamber Ballet, choreographed by Magloire, to be performed at the Manhattan School of Music and at a Magloire concert.

Prize winner of the first award is Elizabeth Gartman, whose new composition, "If These Instruments Could Breathe" for piano and violin, is inspired by the mechanics of the human voice: respiration, vibration, phonation. Born in 1996, Elizabeth Gartman is a composer and soprano based in NYC. Her compositions explore the implications behind the vocal instrument, process in performance, and active listening. As a performer, Elizabeth is dedicated to the contemporary dramatic stage, with a background in classical voice and a current emphasis on new work. She is recipient of the William Schuman Prize for the Most Outstanding Score in the 2021 BMI Student Composer Awards, was selected as a finalist in Beth Morrison Project's "Next Gen" Cycle 2, and was twice recognized as a finalist in ASCAP's Morton Gould Young Composer Competition.

Magloire's Gravity was created as a birthday tribute to composer Friedrich Cerha on the occasion of his 90th birthday five years ago, now being repeated to celebrate the composer's 95th birthday.j The venerable Austrian composer is best known for finishing the orchestration of Alban Berg's opera Lulu after Berg's death. "Gravity played with shapes," wrote Mary Cargill, "as the three dancers formed and reformed groups of two and one, falling and being supported as their bodies merged and melded with an astringent lyricism." The duet i??La Mandragore (The Mandrake) i??takes its name from the plant that has hallucinogenic and narcotic properties and was described by Magloire as "snarly and twisted." Music is the composition of the same name by French composer Tristan Murail.

Nocturne is an excerpt from Magloire's recently premiered full-length ballet Musik created as an homage to the late Willy Burmann, teacher and mentor to Magloire and New Chamber Ballet's dancers past and present. The lovely, lyrical excerpt is set to Brahms Violin Sonata No. 1 in G Major, 1st movement. The full ballet was recently premiered on stage last month at the Mark Morris Dance Center, and premiered a year ago as a film by Emily Kikta and Peter Walker, filmmakers and dancers with New York City Ballet.

New Company member this season is Nicole McGinnis, who began her training in Pasadena, Ca., continuing at the Marat Daukayev School of Ballet in Los Angeles. As a member of the Graduate Program at Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Nicole had the opportunity to perform with the company and the school in works by Balanchine, Terrence Orr, Staycee Pearl, and others.
