On March 12th at 10:00 pm, we’re here to let New York City in on Chicago’s secret: the charm of composer Alan Schmuckler’s melodies and lyricism. Jessie Mueller (On a Clear Day You Can See Forever) leads an all-star cast of Broadway's young stars, including Carey Anderson (Avenue Q, Mamma Mia), Jen Sese (Carrie, Hair), Adam Kantor (Rent), and Steve Rosen (Guys and Dolls, The Farnsworth Invention, Spamalot), as Alan hosts an evening at Joe’s Pub of selections from his musical theater work and performs some of his more personal, singer/songwriter pieces. Alan Schmuckler: I MISS THE CITY is an introduction to this young artist. This is his New York debut. Produced by Magic Futurebox and Jo Lampert.

Alan Schmuckler is a Chicago-based actor, composer/lyricist, and singer/songwriter. As a composer, his new musical The Emperor’s New Clothes (book by David Holstein) enjoyed a critically acclaimed premiere production at the Tony-winning Chicago Shakespeare Theater the summer of 2010. He and Michael Mahler co-wrote book, music and lyrics for Chicago Shakespeare’s How Can You Run with a Shell on Your Back?, which premiered and remounted in 2007, and has since been produced nationwide, including at the Chicago Humanities Festival, the National Alliance for Music Theatre’s 21st Annual Festival of New Musicals, the Marriott Theatre, the Spirit of Broadway Theatre, Stages Theatre Company, and at numerous colleges, including Northwestern University.

Alan’s music and lyrics have been featured in the National Alliance for Music Theatre’s 2005 New Works Summit and 2007 Songwriters’ Showcase; in Chicago’s “Monday Nights, New Voices” series; at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage; and at the York Theatre Company’s NEO6 Benefit Concert and the 4th Annual Broadway in South Africa Gala. His and Michael Mahler's songwriting can also be heard in their band, The Lincoln Squares.

Upcoming projects include Boyfred, a musical TV series co-created with Michael Mahler, Jarrod Zimmerman, Blake Silver and Bruce Helford, currently in development with Sony Television; and a new adaptation of Charles L. Mee’s Summertime, with Laura Eason andJessica Redish, for Writers’ Theatre.

As an actor, he is a three-time Joseph Jefferson-nominated actor, for Jerry/Daphne in Sugar (Drury Lane Oakbrook Terrace – Actor in a Lead Role, Musical); six months as Officer Marcus Moscowicz in Murder For Two (Chicago Shakespeare Theater – Actor in a Lead Role, Musical); and Marchbanks in A Minister’s Wife (Writers’ Theatre – Actor in a Supporting Role, Musical). He can next be seen as Mark in the upcoming Chicago production of Rent directed by MacArthur fellow David Cromer.

Other credits include Charley Kringas in Merrily We Roll Along (The Music Theatre Company - Jeff nomination, Best Production, Musical); Fiorello! (TimeLine Theatre - Jeff citation, Best Production, Musical); as well as work with the Marriott Theatre, Lookingglass Theatre, Northlight Theatre, Drury Lane Water Tower Place, Noble Fool Theatricals, Provision Theater, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. His regional credits include work at Indiana Repertory Theatre and Wagon Wheel Theatre.

Magic Futurebox was founded in 2010 as a playground for the development of theatre and other collaborative forms of art that bring audiences together. Since its inception, MFb has collaborated with over 200 directors, actors, designers, musicians, and roboticists including TED alumnus Heather Knight, the Afghan Women’s Writing Project, Reggie Watts, Heather Christian, DJ Spooky, and Will Connolly (Once on Broadway) on over a dozen productions. Highlights include: SEEWATCHLOOK at the High Line (featured in the New York Times), Sometimes in Prague at 3LD for Ice Factory 2011, the premiere of Tommy Smith's Forth (developed as part of the 2011 Lark PONY Fellowship), and the annual Public Domain series at The Tank, funded by the Department of Cultural Affairs (full list of past productions available at http://www.magicfuturebox.com). Currently, we make our home in Brooklyn, in 20,000 square feet of rehearsal, development, and performance space, appropriately located in a still functioning factory in Industry City.
