Dame Maggie Smith may be currently cherished by millions around the world for her multi-award-winning work on international hit period drama DOWNTON ABBEY, but the stalwart star of stage and screen has now expressed a deep desire to return to the stage - perhaps even as soon as 2015.
Smith received the hallowed London Evening Standard Theatre Icon Award for her remarkable career in the theatre at a special ceremony last weekend, though the notably witty and shrewd legend revealed she feels she barely deserved it.
"I'm very sad because I haven't done anything in theatre to justify this," Smith humbly began while accepting her award.
"I wish I had. Doing something on stage at the National the other night was extraordinary. I'd love to do more," Smith said in reference to her recent spectacular dramatic turn at the fabulously star-studded National Theatre's 50th Anniversary Celebration, broadcast to cinemas around the world and coming to PBS next year.
Additionally, Smith tearfully revealed, "I would love to do more theatre work but really, I don't get any offers. I'm with my agent here and I'm told I'm busy for the next year, but after that I would love to do more work on the stage," before qualifying her statement with, "especially after winning this award."
The icon humorously concluded, "If you could help me put the word out, maybe that would help! Maybe you could put an advert in for me."
