Welcome to MOVING IN, MOVING OUT, BroadwayWorld's monthly real estate recap keeping track of what's checking into Broadway's theatres, and what's heading out. Scroll down for an alphabetical list of the activity at all Broadway houses.
Broadway officially gained its 41st theatre last month, when it was announced that a revival of Lanford Wilson's BURN THIS, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, would open in March at the Hudson Theatre on 44th Street, between Broadway and 6th Avenue. Built in 1903, the Hudson's last theatrical showing was the 4-performance run of MIKE DOWNSTAIRS in April of 1968. Since then, the space has been used as a nightclub and, most recently, a conference center.
This good news helped counter the unfortunate announcements that the Nederlander Theatre's return engagement of MOTOWN, originally intended to run through November 13th, would close up shop on July 31st and that the Palace Theatre's AN AMERICA IN PARIS, which had announced a January 1st final bow, instead pushed the date to October 9th.
Don't expect a new tenant at the Palace soon, as the musical's exit may be quickly followed by the execution of a previously approved plan to lift the historic theatre 29 feet into the air to create street-level retail space.
Two popular Off-Broadway plays are making transfers. After an enthusiastic reception at Lincoln Center's Mitzi Newhouse, J.T. Rogers' OSLO will make the short trip to the Vivian Beaumont. Roundabout's 2015 production of Joshua Harmon's SIGNIFICANT OTHER had been previously announced to arrive at a Shubert house in mid-February, and while there's been no official update, cast member Gideon Glick sent out a note on Twitter stating that previews begin at the Booth Theatre on February 16th.
Two brief engagements were announced in July: Frankie Valli AND THE FOUR SEASONS ON BROADWAY comes to the Lunt-Fontanne in October and ALTON BROWN LIVE: EAT YOUR SCIENCE plays the Barrymore Thanksgiving week.
COME FROM AWAY, the musical telling the uplifting story of how a small Newfoundland town wound up hosting thousands of stranded airline passengers when their planes were forced to land on September 11th, has been announced for a Shubert house in February, after engagements in Washington DC and Toronto. Previously announced to come to Broadway this spring, at theatres yet to be determined, are Phillipa Soo in AMELIE, after wintering in Los Angeles, and a revival of MISS SAIGON, which will land at a Shubert house.
