Four-time Tony® Award winning playwright Terrence McNally celebrates two milestones on The Great White Way-his 20th Broadway production and the 50th Anniversary of his Broadway debut-with the opening night of his newest play, Mothers and Sons, at the Golden Theatre(252 West 45th Street) on Monday, March 24, 2014. Over the course of five decades, Mr. McNally has chronicled the human experience with a wide range of works including Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune, The Full Monty, Ragtime, Master Class, Love! Valour! Compassion!, Kiss of the Spider Woman,The Rink, The Ritz, and Bad Habits. A noted LGBT advocate, Mr. McNally is also credited with his unprecedented tracking of the gay rights movement-in all of its stages-as depicted in his plays, culminating in Mothers and Sons, which features the first legally-married gay couple to appear on a Broadway stage.
Mothers and Sons brings McNally back to the heart of the Theatre District on 45th Street, where the red carpet will be rolled out at the Golden Theatre for a starry New York opening night to be attended by a collection of Broadway icons, cultural tastemakers, and stars of stage and screen.
Tony® and Emmy® Award winner Tyne Daly, stage and screen veteran Frederick Weller, Tony® Award nominee Bobby Steggert and newcomer Grayson Taylorstar in Mothers and Sons, with direction by Tony nominee Sheryl Kaller. At turns funny and powerful, Mothers and Sons portrays a woman (Daly) who pays an unexpected visit to the New York apartment of her late son's partner (Weller), who is now married to another man (Steggert) and has a young son (Taylor). Challenged to face how society has changed around her, generations collide as she revisits the past and begins to see the life her son might have led.
Mothers and Sons stars Tony® and six-time Emmy® winner Tyne Daly (Gypsy, Master Class, "Cagney & Lacey"), stage and screen veteran Frederick Weller ("In Plain Sight," Glengarry Glen Ross), Tony® nominee Bobby Steggert (Big Fish, Ragtime) and newcomer Grayson Taylor. The design team for Mothers and Sons includes scenic design by John Lee Beatty, costume design by Jess Goldstein, lighting design by Jeff Croiter, and sound design by Nevin Steinberg.
Mothers and Sons had its world premiere production at Bucks County Playhouse (Jed Bernstein, Producing Director) on June 13, 2013. Tyne Daly, Bobby Steggert, and Grayson Taylor also starred in that production.
