MODIGLIANI UNMASKED Now on View at The Jewish Museum

Now on view at the Jewish Museum, Modigliani Unmasked is the first exhibition in the United States to focus on Amedeo Modigliani's early work made in the years after he arrived in Paris in 1906.

During this period, Modigliani largely stopped painting to focus on drawing and sculpture to develop his conceptual and pictorial ideas. Seen within the scope of his brief fourteen-year career, this early work reveals what may have motivated Modigliani to develop his unique style of portraiture.

Modigliani Unmasked includes 150 works and puts a spotlight on the artist's drawings, with a large selection acquired directly from Modigliani by Dr. Paul Alexandre, his close friend and first patron. The exhibition also features other drawings from collections around the world and a selection of the artist's paintings and sculptures. Modigliani's art is complemented by work representative of the various multicultural influences - African, Asian, Greek, Egyptian, and Khmer - that inspired the young artist during this lesser-known, early period.

The exhibition, which opened on September 15, remains on view at the Jewish Museum through February 4, 2018. *Please note that the Museum is closing at 2pm on Friday, September 29, and will be closed all day on Saturday, September 30, for Yom Kippur.
