Louis St. Louis, the Detroit musical entrepreneur and Broadway innovator, will once again break all the rules and open up a myriad of artistic possibilities as he crosses several international borders and many oceans to work on two world premiere musicals for China.
He has been tapped to serve as the musical supervisor, arranger and musical director for the world premiere of the multi-million dollar THE JOKER'S GAME which will open in early September of this year. Mr. St. Louis has also been asked to contribute six new songs to the score, one of which, 'Magic,' is already garnering notice in China. Directed by the inexhaustible and internationally renowned Tony Stimac, THE JOKER'S GAME is being produced by Li Dun. The elaborate musical's enchanting story weaves around a modern day Chinese magician and his spellbinding ways while passionately painting the extraordinary soul of the supremely dedicated Chinese performer. The narrative follows the romantic trajectory of two star-crossed lovers whose sparks ignite far greater fireworks than are within any conjuror's arsenal. We are witnessing the pyrotechnics of the heart. After being written in English, THE JOKER'S GAME has been adapted into Chinese. The American director and his team will work with a full Chinese team in their native language. This is a first. In December of this year Louis will return to China where he will collaborate with lyricist James Racheff to write the first American-Style score (Rhythm & Blues, Hip Hop, New Jack Swing and Dance) for that country's musical theatre presentation of the ancient Chinese Legend, THE MONKEY KING. This giant undertaking will be produced at the Water Cube Building that was designed and built for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Here again Mr. Louis will be teaming with Tony Stimac, lyricist James Racheff and co-writer Kemin Zhang with whom is also working on THE JOKER'S GAME.
THE MONKEY KING is being directed by New York's Gabriel Barre. MR. LOUIS was recently honored with a host of awards for his ambitious gospel transforming version of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR at Atlanta's historic ALLIANCE THEATRE. It was, to date, the largest event presented in the venerable Tony Award winning theatre's forty-three year history.Videos
