As part of the Partners in Preservation grant contest that has taken over New York City, Louis Armstrong House Museum had almost 1,000 people attend its Garden Party this past weekend on May 5 & 6. LAHM also hosted a student photo that included a 5’ 6" Louis Armstrong cutout of the Jazz legend in the Quad on the Queens College campus.

Cutout Louis is scheduled to make another appearance at the Museum’s exclusive film screening of Satchmo the Great on Saturday, May 12 at 8:00 pm. The screening is free but seating is limited and is available on a first come basis. The museum has extended historic house tour hours up through 8:00 pm on Saturday, May 12th to accommodate the crowds.

"Louis Armstrong was know as Ambassador Satch so it is fitting that our Louis Armstrong cut-out pops up around the borough to Armstrong the Vote" explained Michael Cogswell, Executive Director for the Museum. "Even though we are small compared to other cultural organizations in the contest our fans around the world have been voting to support us. At one point in the contest we were ranked at 15 and have climbed to number 11 out of 40. We have momentum. With the support of our fans around the world we can pull this off," he added.

If Louis Armstrong House Museum wins the $250,000 in preservation funds, the funds will be dedicated to preserve Louis’s beloved garden. Louis Armstrong celebrated his 71st birthday in the garden, and then passed away two days later.

The top four cultural organizations with the most votes in the contest will win preservation funds. The votes are determined by the public voting daily online at www.PartnersInPreservation.com to support their favorite organization.

Louis Armstrong House Museum was named one of 40 historic places by American Express and the National Historic Trust for Historic Preservation to compete in New York City’s first-ever citywide grassroots preservation contest. The contest runs through May 21st, 2012.
