The New York Philharmonic's performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 8, Symphony of a Thousand, conducted by Lorin Maazel in his last program with the Orchestra as Music Director, will be broadcast live, Thursday, June 25, 2009, on The New York Philharmonic This Week - a two-hour, national, weekly radio program of concerts by the Philharmonic. The radio program will begin at 7:00 p.m. that evening with a tribute to Mr. Maazel and Principal Clarinet Stanley Drucker, who retires at the end of the season after 60 years with the Philharmonic, followed by the live concert at 7:30 p.m. The pre-concert tribute will feature interviews with Mr. Maazel and Mr. Drucker, as well as accolades from Music Director Designate Alan Gilbert and Concertmaster Glenn Dicterow, among others. The broadcast is part of a series of events that celebrate Lorin Maazel's seven-year tenure with the New York Philharmonic, which concludes with performances of Mahler's Symphony No. 8 June 24-27, 2009. The Mahler concerts bring to a close the survey of the complete Mahler symphonies that Mr. Maazel began in his first season.

In addition to the live broadcast, other celebratory events surrounding Mr. Maazel include a multimedia archival exhibition, Lorin Maazel - A Grand Finale, on the Grand Promenade of Avery Fisher Hall until June 28, which includes a retrospective of Mr. Maazel's Philharmonic career through photos, programs, and interviews with Mr. Maazel. A special Website tribute on nyphil.org includes a specially produced video exclusive interview footage and highlights from Mr. Maazel's various Live From Lincoln Center appearances; a slide show of moments from his seven-year Philharmonic tenure; and a timeline that covers his more than 60-year career.

This June 25 broadcast replaces the concert of Lorin Maazel's Monaco Fanfares and Farewells and Sibelius's Symphony No. 2, which had been previously announced for the week of June 24.

The New York Philharmonic This Week is syndicated nationally to more than 295 stations by the WFMT Radio Network. WFMT's Kerry Frumkin is the host; WFMT's Mark Travis is the broadcast producer; New York Philharmonic Audio Director Lawrence Rock is the engineer and music producer. The concerts are available on the Philharmonic's Website, nyphil.org, for two weeks following the broadcast. The program is heard locally in the New York metropolitan area on 96.3 FM WQXR on
Thursdays at 9:00 p.m. [Check local listings.]
