Lone Star Theatre Co is proud to announce their upcoming 2016-2017 season, "Cinco de Lone Star." The season, which marks the fifth year that Lone Star Theatre has been bringing Texas pages to New York stages, will focus a great deal of its programming on Latino voices. The season features new works by Raquel Almazan, Oscar Cabrera, Mandy Murphy, Nilsa Reyna and more.
The season kicks off on September 19th with a reading of Nilsa Reyna's LEGENDS OF TEXAS. This dark comedy set in a South Texas border town explores the fight over gun control in America. This play is presented as part of the Texas Reads series and was developed through the Robert Askins Playwright Fellowship at Lone Star Theatre. LEGENDS OF TEXAS is directed by David Davila and presented at Jack Dempsey's.
The Texas Reads series continues on October 17th with a presentation of VALER by Mandy Murphy. When the only male cousin and sole continuer of the family name dies, the Burnetts must mourn and find a new way forward. VALER will be presented at Jack Dempsey's.
On February 20th, Lone Star Theatre will team-up with La Lucha Arts in a co-production of Raquel Almazan's LA NEGRA. As the Day of the Dead approaches, Drug Cartel Queen La Negra takes a ritualistic journey from child prostitute to patron saint of Mexico: La Santa Muerte. LA NEGRA will be presented at Jack Dempsey's.
The Texas Reads series concludes on March 20th with a reading of BONNET BLUES by Oscar Cabrera. As Hortencia struggles with Alzheimers, an unexpected friendship and a simple magic trick give her reason to question everything she thinks she already knows. BONNET BLUES will be presented at Jack Dempsey's.
To commemorate the occasion of Lone Star's fifth season, a music festival will be presented on January 27th at Mockingbird Bar in the Lower East Side. The TEXAS SINGS Festival will include original music by a host of Texas songwriters including Charles Barksdale, Karl Hedrick, Jackson Perrin, and Mariela Flor Olivo. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.
The season will culminate with the fifth annual Texas One Act Play Festival presented on April 24th. This year's theme will be Crossing Borders and feature new short plays by Tejano playwrights David Davila, Ryan Ramirez, Maxwell Martinez, and StephaniE Sosa.
Now in it's fifth season, Lone Star Theatre Company is dedicated to bringing Texas Pages to New York stages by giving opportunities to Texas writers to have their work presented in the center of theatre around the world.
