The Marriage Bed, Nona Sheppard's London hit about same-sex marriage, will have its American premiere on Thursday, October 12th at the Sanford Meisner
Theater (164 11th Avenue - between 22nd and 23rd Streets) where it
will play through Sunday, November 19th. Preview performances begin Friday, October 6th.
The critically acclaimed play, which opened at London's Drill Hall on May 26th, 2006, is "the love story of Jennifer Shahar (Jeni) and Valerie Glenys Carr (Val) who have been blissfully living together for seven wonderful years when Great Britain passes a Parliamentary Bill legalizing same-sex Civil Unions," according to press materials.
"What with the disappearance of all litigious interference and the removal of all social obstacles, Val and Jeni must now face the monumental decision as to whether they should marry; or not. A decision complicated by the fact that Jeni, an Israeli once-divorced-much-revered corporate attorney, is firmly in the closet; while Val, a London Underground Station Manager and former 60's-activist, has been hiding behind her radical past and her laser-like defiance of 'The Man,' who heretofore has not allowed her and Jeni to marry."
The Marriage Bed stars Shepphard and Tali Friedman. Sheppeard also serves as director and Friedman is the play's producer. Scenery is by Marsha Roddy, lighting is by Takis and sound design is by Andrew Dodge.
Shepphard is a playwright and director who has many years of
experience writing and directing plays in Britain and abroad. She has
over ninety productions and forty commissioned plays to her credit. Her
plays for young people, which have received several awards, have been
seen in USA, Canada, Europe and Russia. She has worked regularly at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London
since 1987.
