Known for her signature style that utilizes non-narrative, abstract movement, California-native Liz Gerring established Liz Gerring Dance Company in 1998 in New York City. Since its inception, the company has become known for its close collaboration with various contemporary visual artists and with electronic music composer, Michael J. Schumacher.
Following its successful 2015 Joyce Theater engagement, Liz Gerring Dance Company returns to Chelsea with the New York premiere of Horizon, an exploration into the idea of destiny. This piece features seven athletic dancers, including former Merce Cunningham soloist Brandon Collwes, in various partner and group configurations on a brilliant white floor under a floating, illuminated ceiling. In setting multiple choreographic phrases occurring simultaneously, Gerring investigates the movement of average pedestrians to create a constantly shifting universe of activity. Commissioned by The Joyce Theater Foundation, Horizon features a breathtaking scenic and lighting design by multiple award-winner Robert Wierzel, as well as an original multi-channel score of sound-effects and music by Michael J. Schumacher.
Liz Gerring (Choreographer and Liz Gerring Dance Company Artistic Director ) was born in San Francisco in 1965. She grew up in the Los Angeles area and began studying dance at age 13. In high school, she studied dance at the Cornish Institute in Seattle. In 1987, she received a B.F.A. from The Juilliard School, where she studied with Kazuko Hirabayashi and Doris Rudko. She has been working as a choreographer in New York since 1998, when she presented her first piece, a four-hour movement installation, and formed Liz Gerring Dance Company. From a longstanding commitment to athleticism and artistry, Gerring has developed a company of dancers that has fully met the demands and extended the boundaries of the art form. Gerring was awarded the Jacob's Pillow Dance Award in 2015, a Joyce Commissioning residency in 2016, and a City Center New York Choreographic Fellowship in 2017.
The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for over three decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther's clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 400 U.S.-based and international companies. The Joyce has also presented dance at Lincoln Center since 2012, and launched Joyce Unleashed in 2014 to feature emerging and experimental artists. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (K-12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists. The Joyce's annual season of about 48 weeks of dance now includes over 340 performances for audiences in excess of 150,000.
Performances of Liz Gerring Dance Company will be November 30-December 3 at The Joyce Theater (175 Eighth Avenue at 19th Street) according to the following schedule: Thursday through Saturday at 8pm; and Sunday at 2pm. There will be a post-performance Curtain Chat with Liz Gerring Dance Company on Friday, December 1, which is open to all patrons attending that evening's performance. Tickets range in price from $10-$46 and can be purchased at www.Joyce.org, or by calling JoyceCharge at 212-242-0800. Please note: ticket prices are subject to change.
