Littman and White Galleries Present Lost, 4/5-27

Photography captures moments. These moments are found and lost. In the past, photographs were collected and preserved privately, in albums, scrapbooks or shoeboxes and thought of as personal archives or histories. Do to the internet, means of digital capture, sharing and posting, or the discarding of paper ephemera, images began to travel on their own, to move from private to anonymous, from personal to universal, from personally significant to public insignificance. Images lost their official identity and transformed themselves into a random history, uneven, distorted, open for reinterpretation. Images are not 'theirs' any longer, they are 'ours'!
LOST highlights some of the contemporary transformations of the 'photograph'. For this exhibition four artists compiled a series of images gleaned or collected from the vast anonymous pool found on the internet, in magazines, advertisements, or other public sources and represent them as valid artifacts. These images were 'magically' found, lost and found again…
This exhibition is part of the Portland Photo Month, and is presented as a commentary or an aside to the discipline of photography in general, the role it plays in our lives, its ever changing nature, and the rich and mysterious territory it covers.
Horia Boboia was born in Romania. He received a BFA and MFA from California Institute of the Arts, Los Angeles, CA and at times lived and worked in Bucharest, Los Angeles, New York, Tel-Aviv, and Berlin. He is currently living and working in Portland, OR and teaches art at Portland State University. He works with painting, photography, video and mixed media and exhibited his work nationally and internationally.
Sean Joseph Patrick Carney is a visual artist, writer, and educator living and working in Portland, OR. Carney's work is concerned with comedy as a social tool and includes multiple mediums including, but not limited to, live performance, sculpture, critical essays, printmaking, and sound. He is the founder of Social Malpractice Publishing, an artist book distributor, and a co-founder of the Conceptual Oregon Performance School (C.O.P.S.), a free, artist-run school focusing on contemporary performance strategies and theory. His works and performances have been exhibited nationally and internationally. Carney holds an MFA in Visual Studies from Pacific Northwest College of Art.
Alex Dolan is an artist whose work investigates hybrid connections between technology and everyday life. He lives and works in Portland OR.
Rebecca Steele is a West Coast based artist, photographer, writer, and historiographer. Steele is excited by sunshine and installation based anything. Her work has been exhibited and published internationally by such organizations as Independent Curators International, Portland Institute of Contemporary Art, Publication Studios, and Country Club Projects. She has a BS in History and a Black Studies Certificate from Portland State University and an MFA in Visual Studies From Pacific Northwest College of Art.
