Lionel Bringuier will conduct the New York Philharmonic in Dukas's The Sorcerer's Apprentice; Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 2, featuring Leonidas Kavakos; Kodaly's Dances of Galanta; and Stravinsky's Firebird Suite (1919), Thursday, June 13, 2013, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, June 14 at 2:00 p.m.; Saturday, June 15 at 8:00 p.m.; and Tuesday, June 18 at 7:30 p.m.

Russian and Eastern European folklore and folk music inform the varied works on this program, all of which were composed within a 40-year period. Dukas's The Sorcerer's Apprentice is based on Goethe's ballad Der Zauberlehrling, which in turn is based on a Syrian tale, which dates from approximately 175 AD. Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 2 contains reminiscences of Russian folklore, which is the more explicit source for the plot and characters that inhabit Stravinsky's ballet The Firebird. Kodaly was known as an ethnomusicologist as well as a composer, and his Dances of Galanta, which presents Hungarian folk tunes in a preservationist spirit, reflects both aspects of his career.

Leonidas Kavakos has appeared with the Philharmonic 29 times since making his debut with the Orchestra in July 2002. He has even traveled on tour with the Orchestra, appearing on the EUROPE / AUTUMN 2010 tour conducted by Music Director Alan Gilbert. "Leonidas is one of the great violinists playing on stage today," Alan Gilbert has said. This program marks Lionel Bringuier's first time conducting the full New York Philharmonic; in his first appearance with the Philharmonic, in June 2009, he conducted the chamber orchestra in Britten's War Requiem in performances led by then-Music Director Lorin Maazel.
