Lion King Sets Minskoff Box Office Record in First Week

In THE LION KING’'s first week at its new home at the Minskoff Theatre, the show set a new box office record there with a gross of $ 1,194,856, beating The Minskoff's record for both eight and nine-performance weeks. The previousrecord there for a nine-performance week during Fiddler on the Roof's run was $1,145,912.

Since opening on Broadway in 1997, THE LION KING is the winner of over 70 major awards worldwide and has become a global phenomenon seen by nearly 34 million people. In addition to New York City, where the record-breaking show is soon entering its tenth year of sold out performances, THE LION KING can also be seen in London, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Tokyo and two touring companies throughout the United States. Later this summer, THE LION KING will premiere at the Shanghai Grand Theatre in China on July 18 and in Seoul, South Korea on August 28.

Disney's THE LION KING just moved to The Minskoff Theatre, with its first performance there taking place on June 13. The move from The New Amsterdam Theatre took place beginning June 4 and included all 52-cast members and the entire 24-member orchestra. It followed the completion of custom renovations to accommodate the Tony Awardâ-winning production.
