Lincoln Center Holds 50th Anniversary Exhibit Of Rarely-Seen List Posters 6/1-21

Lincoln Center begins a year long celebration of its 50th Anniversary season in May 2009, commemorating the 1959 groundbreaking of the world's leading performing arts center. To salute the institution's historic milestone, Lincoln Center at Time Warner Center, a special 50th Anniversary exhibit of approximately thirty rarely-seen works from Lincoln Center's distinguished List Poster and Print Collection, is scheduled to be displayed on the second floor public gallery space at Time Warner Center, June 1 - 21. The exhibit is free to the public, open Monday - Saturday 10 AM to 9 PM, and Sunday 11 AM to 7 PM.

On view will be a number of prints specially commissioned for Lincoln Center's 50th Anniversary, including Guillermo Kuitca's work celebrating the February 2009 grand re-opening of Alice Tully Hall and a Pinocchio piece by Jim Dine, as well as early works from the collection by Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Motherwell, and Andy Warhol.

Lincoln Center's List Poster & Print Program was established in 1962 by Albert and Vera List not only to make contemporary art available to the public, but also to ensure that the artwork created for Lincoln Center is of the highest quality. The collection consists of exceptional prints commissioned by Lincoln Center from prominent artists including James Rosenquist, Joel Shapiro, Julian Schnabel, and Jennifer Bartlett, among many others. The works commemorate Lincoln Center presentations such as Great Performers and Mostly Mozart, and special events such as the opening of the Metropolitan Opera.

Each work in the print series is signed and numbered in pencil by the artist. Each print is a serigraph, with each color coming from an individual screen. This method combines hand-drawn and mechanical techniques, and is closely supervised by the artist during the process. At the end of each limited run (approximately 108 prints), all screens are destroyed, which prevents duplication and increases the value of the works.

Exhibitions

Selections from the List collection have been exhibited throughout the U.S. and Europe, and are included in the Library of Congress as well as in notable public and private collections. On Paper: Lincoln Center/List Art Collection is on exhibit at the corporate headquarters of Credit Suisse in Manhattan through April 2009. Upcoming are exhibitions at two commercial galleries, the Hamilton-Selway Gallery in Los Angeles, CA (May 2009) and the Shore Gallery in Provincetown, MA (July-August 2009); as well as at the American Academy in Rome (2010). List prints have also been part of Art Basel Miami Beach every year since 2003. Shows during 2008-09 included those at the residence of the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens in West Palm Beach, FLA, a site included in the National Register of Historic Places; and two commercial galleries, the Somerhill Gallery in Durham, NC and the Karen Lynne Gallery in Boca Raton, FLA.
