DriudSynge headlines this year's Lincoln Center Festival 2006, opening July 10. Tony Award-winner and Artistic Director of the Druid Theatre Company, Garry Haynes (The Beauty Queen Of Leenane), directs DriudSynge which is comprised of six of John Millington Synge's plays. It will run through July 23rd.
The plays are:
Riders to the Sea, The Playboy of the Western World (his two most famous works)
, Deirdre of the Sorrows, The Shadow of the Glen, The Well of the Saints and
The Tinker's Wedding."DruidSynge premiered at Galway Arts Festival in July 2005 and played to capacity audiences in Dublin and Edinburgh. DruidSynge concluded its 2005 run on Inis Mein, Synge's artistic and spiritual home and featured two, full-day performances of the Synge Cycle at Dun Conchubhair Iron Age fort," state press notes.
In 1996, Druid premiered the debut work of
Martin McDonagh,
The Beauty Queen Of Leenane, which opened in Galway and subsequently played in London, Sydney, Dublin and on Broadway where the production won four Tony Awards, including Best Director for Garry Hynes, the first woman to win such an award.
"Founded in 1975, Druid was the first professional theatre company in Ireland outside Dublin and is universally recognized as one of the pioneers of the modern cultural development of Ireland in the last three decades. From its Galway home, it has been to the fore in the development of Irish theatre, performing in its home in Chapel Lane, elsewhere in Galway, Ireland and beyond."
Before playing Lincoln Center, DruidSynge will be presented in its entirety June 10, 12, 14, 16, 19, 21 and 23 at 2:00pm at the Gerald W. Lynch Theatre at John Jay College at 10th Avenue between 58th and 59th Streets.
