Lincoln Center Announces October 2013 Lineup, Featuring Concerts and Poetry

Lincoln Center announces its October lineup. Events include Target Free Thursdays, Poetry Competition, White Light Festivals, and Great Performers concerts. See detailed list in chronological order below:

Taylor Mac: 1950

The Bard of Democracy, Walt Whitman, will take over the David Rubenstein Atrium as portrayed by performance artist and singer Taylor Mac. Selections from Whitman's Leaves of Grass will be performed to original musical compositions as well as popular music from the 1850s. This performance is commissioned by Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts for Target Free Thursdays, and it is part of a 24-hour piece that Taylor Mac is developing on the history of music in America from 1770 to the present. Mac is a dazzling (and bedazzled) performer popular with New York's demi-monde as well as its more established cabaret scene.

In collaboration with Balkan Café

Zlatne Uste, the internationally renowned American-born musicians, bring their signature spin on the Balkan Café dance party to the Atrium. Traditional music from Serbian, Macedonian, Bulgarian, and Romany cultures will fill the air and spice up the evening. Bring dancing shoes and lots of friends for this exhilarating night of music, dance, and Balkan culture.

New York City Youth Poet Laureate Final Competition

In collaboration with NYC Votes - New York City Finance Board & Urban Word NYC

This event celebrates the creativity of New York teenagers throughout the five boroughs. NYC's top teen poets express themselves through spoken word in the acclaimed Youth Poet Laureate competition, where the first place poet is named NYC's official Youth Poet Laureate for one year, and earns his or her very own book. The event also kicks off the second year of Lincoln Center Education's citywide Poet-Linc poetry slam, in which city youth develop their writing and performance skills while competing for prizes and inclusion in Lincoln Center's anthology of their work, published by Black Dog. This evening will celebrate the release of two books: Poet-Linc Poetry Slam, the first-ever anthology of the Poet-Linc teens from the 2012 competition, and the 2012 Youth Poet Laureate's work.

The Great Performers season opens with the London Symphony Orchestra and acclaimed pianist Emanuel Ax led by long-time guest conductor Bernard Haitink in two concerts juxtaposing Shostakovich and Mozart. The two composers' early works are paired in this first concert.

This evening's performance, a continuation of the exploration begun on October 20 will pair two additional works. This evening includes the intimate, expressive Mozart Concerto No. 27, K.595 which premiered in March 1791 with Mozart himself at the keyboard in what was to be composer's last public appearance; he died in December of that year.

The White Light Festival kicks off with a free concert as part of Target Free Thursdays at the David Rubenstein Atrium. Pedal steel guitarist Chuck Campbell-a National Heritage Fellowship recipient-will be joined by brothers Darick on lap steel and Phil on electric guitar for a rousing program of African-American gospel with an added twist: the wailing sounds of the steel guitar.

Le Concert d'Astrée, one of today's leading Baroque ensembles, offers the rarely-performed work that launched Emmanuelle Haïm's conducting career, Aci, Galatea e Polifemo. The piece was first heard in Naples in 1708, and is the Italian-language predecessor to Handel's most renownEd English opera, Acis and Galatea. The plot follows a story from Ovid'sMetamorphoses about the sea nymph Galatea, in love with the shepherd Aci, who is killed by the jealous giant, Polifemo.

Dublin Guitar Quartet (New York debut)

The Dublin Guitar Quartet (DGQ) is the first classical guitar quartet entirely dedicated to new music. With an original catalogue of arrangements of work by composers including Phillip Glass, György Ligeti, and more, the DGQ is noted for bringing contemporary music to new audiences and has also played with such rock groups as Dublin's Redneck Manifesto and Canada's Final Fantasy. Up-close (U.S. premiere)

Four innovative multimedia works by the outstanding Dutch composer and filmmaker Michel van der Aa are performed in this special portrait concert featuring Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and musicians from ICE. One of the most original composers of his generation, van der Aa is known for unexpected combinations of sound and scenic imagery. His concerto Up-close for cello, string ensemble, and film, won the prestigious Grawemeyer Award in 2012 and receives its U.S. premiere at this White Light Festival performance.

The work Up-close is performed by special arrangement with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

La Santa Cecilia takes its name from the patron saint of musicians. Called "The Best Alternative Band of the Year" by LA Weekly, this six-member Mexican-American ensemble delivers a powerful Latin hybrid of modern-day Latin, rock, and world music. The group's new release on Universal features a collaboration with Elvis Costello.

Roysten Abel's dazzling music-theater work returns to the Festival after a 2010 premiere that received a "tumultuous, instantaneous ovation" (The New York Times) at the end of the show. The repertoire is a mix of folk and classical Indian music with a stage set displaying four levels of boxes outlined in lights, each box faced with red velvet curtains framing a musician. The Manganiyars are a Northwest Indian caste of musicians who originally performed for royalty and have incorporated the worship of Hindu deities into their Muslim faith.
