Lincoln Center Announces January-March TARGET FREE THURSDAYS Lineup

An exciting range of performances including a post-modern variety show, a contemporary psychedelic funk opera, a celebration for the acclaimed Apollo Theater in conjunction with its 75th anniversary exhibition, and the U.S. debut of Daorum, an innovative collaboration between Korean and Australian jazz musicians highlight the next three months of TARGET® FREE THURSDAYS at the David Rubenstein Atrium.

Program details for TARGET® FREE THURSDAYS performances for January through March 2011 follow. All performances start at 8:30 p.m. at the David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center, Broadway between 62nd and 63rd Streets. Admission is free. Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. The ‘wichcraft cafe, serving food and drinks, is open before and the performance. The Atrium closes at 10 p.m.

SXIP'S HOUR OF CHARM hosted and curated by Sxip Shirey

Composer, circus-performer, story-teller Sxip Shirey brings his wacky, traveling variety show featuring some of New York City's most intriguing and unusual performing artists to the Atrium. On the bill are Butoh-trained dancer and contortionist Jonathan Nosan; Samurai Sword Soul, choreographed Japanese sword fighters; the raunchy, funny and loveable comedian/story-teller Greg Walloch; Butt Kapinski (the clown alter-ego of improv performer Deanna Fleysher) and violinist Sarah "Snaps" Alden performing A Clown Noir; and blues and jazz-inflected singer-songwriter Dayna Kurtz. Thursday, January 13 at 8:30 pm - SILVER ROOTS: ANCIENT DANCES

Presented in collaboration with the Irish Arts Center

Silver Roots-Maria Millar, violin, Shawn Wyckoff, flute and Michael Haas, cello-explore the intersection of classical music and the traditional music and dances of Europe in their compelling new program Ancient Dances. Drawing from classical and world music sources, improvisation and original material, the program is a journey of sonic discovery. The world premiere of a work by Norwegian composer Otto Martin Christensen highlights the evening. Also on the program: a piece juxtaposing works by English Baroque composer Matthew Locke, alongside those of 20th-century master Henry Cowell, and a compendium of up-tempo dance tunes from Ireland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Germany and England. The musicians of Silver Roots, all graduates of Juilliard, were recently awarded a Chamber Music America ResidenCy Grant. Since 2008, the trio has presented concerts, workshops, masterclasses and outreach programs across the country and in Canada. They have appeared at Lincoln Center as part of MEE THE ARTISTS series. January 20 at 8:30 pm - Gordon Voidwell

An intoxicating mix of 80's new wave, funk, and R&B, with a dash of hip-hop swagger and the DIY spirit of indie culture Gordon Voidwell is the alter-ego of Will Johnson, a Bronx-born ex-chorister turned rap geek. A multi-instrumentalist, trained vocalist and a published fashion writer, his music is subversive pop and funk, along the lines of Tom Tom Club, Madonna, Prince, David Bowie, and George Clinton. Voidwell uses analog synthesizers and chunky drum machines as the backdrop for silky, reverb-drenched vocals-also reminiscent of Cameo, New Edition and other noted 80s R&B crooners. Blending old sounds with updated lexicon, Voidwell creates a sonic collage-one that is oh so familiar but at once strange and unusual. This is the point; to embrace the immense void that exists between seemingly opposite ideas of past and future, hip and dorky, pop and indie etc. etc.. January 27 at 8:30 pm - Apollo Theatre: A CELEBRATION

The world famous Apollo Theater is so much more than a historic landmark-it is a source of pride and a symbol of the brilliance of American artistic accomplishment. Known as the 'Soul of American Culture', this iconic New York institution recently celebrated its 75th anniversary and now returns to Lincoln Center bringing a new act to the Atrium as it kicks off a nationwide museum tour that showcases the Apollo's incredible history. From performers such as Duke Ellington and Luther Vandross to Mo'Nique and Dave Chappelle, the Apollo has had legendary artists grace its stage and has been the jumping off point for many storied careers with its Amateur Night at the Apollo to It's Showtime at The Apollo. Honoring the artists of Apollo's past and previewing the Apollo's future, current Apollo favorites will take the stage for an evening of great music, laughter, and memories. February 3 at 8:30 pm - Michael Leonhart & Avramina 7

SEAHORSE AND THE STORYTELLER

Trumpet player, producer, multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger and singer-songwriter Michael Leonhart imagined a concept album that would meld the styles of Bollywood funk scores, Afrobeat, 1960's psychedelic rock, and the fantastical storytelling of artists such as The Beatles, Donovan and The Byrds. With Seahorse and The Storyteller he has created a modern kaleidoscopic opera that in Leonhart's words, "tells the story of two mythical creatures that meet, fall in love and begin piecing together the mysteries of each other's past." The Avramina 7 is made up of musicians who have helped to build the New York/Brooklyn funk and soul scene. The 16-piece collective features members of The Dap-Kings, Plastic Ono Band, The Phenomenal Handclap Band, Budos Band, Menahan Street Band, El Michels Affair, and Antibalas, among others. March 3 at 8:30 pm - The Sweet Remains

The Sweet Remains is headed by Rich Price, Greg Naughton, and Brian Chartrand, three gifted and charismatic singer-songwriters, each of whom contributes to the writing and three-part harmonies that define the band's sound. "It's been a long time since 3-part harmonies this lush were yoked to songs this melodically gorgeous," is what the Boston Herald said about The Sweet Remains. Their songs easily appeal to fans of modern folk-rockers such as Jason Mraz, Ray Lamontagne, and John Mayer. However, it is their rich layered harmonies that distinguish The Sweet Remains from the throngs of guitar-toting troubadours. Daorum is a phenomenon, a meeting of old and new, of East and West, a groundbreaking musical project creating an exciting high-energy cultural exchange. Simon Barker, one of Australia's greatest jazz drummers, leads a contingent of Australian musicians who, together with renowned Korean Pansori artist Bae Il Dong and percussionist Kim Dong Won, create what Living Arts Korea has described as a "utopian anthem." In 2005 Barker traveled to Korea to explore traditional music. During his incredible journey he met with some of Korea's greatest musicians including the late Kim Seok Chul, a Grand Master of Shaman music. Film-maker Emma Franz documented the journey in the acclaimed documentary film, Intangible Asset Number 82. Launched in November 2009, TARGET® FREE THURSDAYS offers free public performances by a wide-range of artists every Thursday night throughout the year at the new David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center, a vibrant new public facility on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts is partnering with Target® to sponsor the series. Curated by Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Inc., TARGET® FREE THURSDAYS performances feature national and International Artists as well as local artists. The series also features artists from Lincoln Center's resident organizations including The Juilliard School, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Film Society of Lincoln Center and The Chamber Music Society, among others, along with artists curated by community-based partners. The series presents a diverse cross-section of musical genres, including pop, Latin, rock, soul, country, jazz, world, classical and new music, as well as spoken word, multi-media and dance performances.

The David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center, the new community, visitors and ticketing facility, is home to an array of programs, services and amenities designed for area residents, out-of-towners and visitors to Lincoln Center. This new public space is named in honor of the philanthropist, financier and Vice Chairman of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, in recognition of his $10 million gift to the Bravo Campaign. Serving as a gateway to Lincoln Center and the entire Upper West Side community, the Atrium offers-for the first time in Lincoln Center history-day-of discount tickets to available performances across the campus in addition to access to full-price tickets via onsite kiosks and telephone services. Along with free performances, including Target® Free Thursdays every Thursday night of the year, and Meet the Artist Saturdays-free, family-friendly participatory programs at 11 a.m. on the first Saturday of every month-other attractions and amenities in the Atrium include: a ‘wichcraft café, a departure point for expanded Lincoln Center tours, a staffed Information Desk, free Wi-Fi, and restrooms.

Among the David Rubenstein Atrium's varied programs and services is a one-stop box office location for available, same-day discount performance tickets to Lincoln Center events. Daily events from across the campus, including performances presented by Lincoln Center and its resident organizations will be available at the Donald and Barbara Zucker Box Office at the Atrium. Tickets to available performances will be discounted at 25 % OR 50 % off the regular price. Tickets go on sale at 12 noon every day and are sold, two per person, on a first come, first served basis. The Donald and Barbara Zucker Box Office is closed on Monday, so those tickets will be sold on Sunday. The Rubenstein Atrium also offers help and guidance to patrons who want to purchase full-price tickets for future performances.

The Rubenstein Atrium is also the new departure point for Lincoln Center campus tours. Tour options include foreign language tours in Spanish, Italian, French, German, and Japanese (for groups, by reservation only); a newly-created "Art and Architecture" tour (also for groups, by reservation); and special Jazz at Lincoln Center tours. Daily walk-up tours for the public are offered between 10:30 am and 4:30 pm (exact times are on the Atrium website.) Opened in 1905 as the Colonial Music Hall, the venue on the site of the current Atrium featured vaudeville acts such as the dance team of Fred and Adele Astaire and it introduced Charlie Chaplin to American audiences. In the 1920s it became a Broadway theater, then a movie palace in the 1930s and 40s, before becoming a TV studio for both NBC and ABC. In 1971 it was renamed the Harkness Theater to house Rebecca Harkness' ballet company and school, before closing in the late 1970s. The theater was torn down, replaced by condominiums and a public plaza called the Harmony Atrium.
