In the Heights mastermind and Tony Award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda and longtime girlfriend Vanessa Nadal who grew up with Lin-Manuel in the Heights, got engaged on October 30 at the Plaza de la Paja while vacationing in Madrid. The pair have been dating since 2005.
The principal female character in In the Heights is presumably named after her.
Lin-Manuel Miranda won the 2008 Tony Award for Best Original Score for In the Heights. Off-Broadway In the Heights won nine Drama Desk nominations, including Best Music, Best Lyrics and won the award for Outstanding Ensemble Performance; the Lucille Lortel Award and Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical; the Obie Award for Outstanding Music and Lyrics; a Theatre World Award for Outstanding Debut Performance and the Clarence Derwent Award, both for Mr. Miranda's performance. He is the recipient of the 2007 ASCAP Richard Rodgers New Horizons Award.
In addition to In the Heights, Miranda was invited by composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz to contribute two new songs to a revised version of Schwartz and Nina Faso's 1978 musical Working, which opened in May 2008 at the Asolo Repertory Theatre in Sarasota, Florida. Miranda wrote Spanish-language dialogue and worked with Stephen Sondheim to translate into Spanish song lyrics for the revival of West Side Story, which opened on Broadway in March 2009. Accompanied by fellow Tony Winner Alex Lacamoire, Miranda performed The Hamilton Mixtape, a hip-hop album based on the life of Alexander Hamilton, at the White House Evening of Poetry, Music, and the Spoken Word on May 12, 2009 for the President and First Lady. He is also a composer and actor on the 2009 revival of The Electric Company. Miranda wrote, directed, and acted in the independent film Clayton's Friends and has guest starred on The Sopranos and House. He will next appear in the 40th season premiere of Sesame Street.
Congratulations to the happy couple!
