According to an casting breakdown, THE HAMILTON MIXTAPE, a new musical by Tony winner Lin-Manuel Miranda, will get a New York City workshop this spring. The project will be produced by the Public Theater and will feature direction by Thomas Kail, musical supervision by Alex Lacamoire and choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler. Below, check out highlights from the musical as performed by Miranda, Gavin Creel, James Monroe Iglehart, Christopher Jackson and more as a part of Lincoln Center's 2012 American Songbook season.
Performers in the 2012 concert included: Utkarsh Ambudkar, Gavin Creel, James Monroe Iglehart, Christopher Jackson, Rebecca Naomi Jones, Moeisha Mcgill, Jon Rua, and Chris "Shockwave" Sullivan. The show revolves around Alexander Hamilton, an "Eminem meets Sweeney Todd" character, decribed as an "earnest, ambitious hothead." Other historical figures of the time are also characters, including Aaron Burr ("Javert meets Mos Def"), Eliza Hamilton ("Alicia Keys meets Elphaba"), and George Washington ("John Legend meets Mufasa"). Casting is currently underway for the workshop, which is set for April 7-May 11.
The Hamilton Mixtape is a hip-hop song cycle about the life and death of Alexander Hamilton and showcases a fusion of Miranda's signature Latin, hip-hop and classic Broadway styles. The show was recently presented as a part of Vassar College's 2013 Powerhouse Theater season.
Miranda's musical In The Heights received four 2008 Tony Awards (including Best Orchestrations, Best Choreography and Best Musical), with Miranda receiving a Tony Award for Best Score, as well as a nomination for Best Leading Actor in a Musical. Additionally, In The Heights also took home a 2009 Grammy Award for its Original Broadway Cast Album, and was also recognized as a Finalist for the 2009 Pulitzer Prize in Drama.
Miranda is the recipient of the 2007 ASCAP Richard Rodgers New Horizons Award. The actor's TV and film credits include The Electric Company, Sesame Street, The Sopranos, House, Modern Family, The Sex and the City Movie and The Odd Life of Timothy Green.
Lin-Manuel is a co-founder and member of Freestyle Love Supreme, a popular hip-hop
improv group that performs regularly in New York City. The group has also toured the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, as well as the Aspen, Melbourne and Montreal Comedy Festivals. Recently, Lin-Manuel contributed new songs to the upcoming revival of Stephen Schwartz' Working and worked with Arthur Laurents and Stephen Sondheim on Spanish translations for the 2009 Broadway Revival of West Side Story.
