Some principal casting has been announced for the musical Sister Act, based on the hit 1992 nun-on-the-run comedy with Whoopi Goldberg.  In addition, the creative team has been announced.

The show will have its world premiere at California's Pasadena Playhouse from October 24th through November 26th before playing Atlanta's ALLIANCE THEATRE from January 17th through February 25th.

With
a gospel-tinged score by Alan Menken (Little Shop of Horrors, Beauty and the Beast), lyrics by Glenn Slater, and a book by Cheri and Bill Steinkellner (Princesses), the show will star Dawnn Lewis (upcoming Dreamgirls film, "A Different World"), as well as Elizabeth Ward Land (The Scarlet Pimpernel, City of Angels) as the Mother Superior, and TV and film veteran Henry Polic II.

"When disco club singer Deloris Van Cartier (Lewis) is placed in protective custody in a dying convent, her unique brand of funk comes face-to-face with the traditions of the church and the strict order is in for a change. Masquerading as a nun named Mary Clarence, this Sister's act will have you laughing and singing in the aisles," state Pasadena Playhouse notes on the musical, which will be directed by Peter Schneieder, a former executive with Walt Disney Theatricals.

The whow will be choreographed by
Marguerite Derricks, with sets by David Potts, costumes by Garry Lennon, lighting by Donald Holder and sound by Carl Casella and Dominick Sack.  The show will also feature orchestratoins by Doug Besterman and musical supervision by Michael Kosarin.

The Atlanta run will be a co-production with the Pasadena Playhouse.

Starring Goldberg, Maggie Smith, Kathy Najimy and Harvey Keitel, the film, which was directed by Emilie Ardolino and featured a screenplay by Joseph Howard, was a smash hit at the box office and inspired a sequel--Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit.
